while it's not the Jet JOVS-10 floor model unit I used to have in my former shop, it is a spindle sander that suits the scale of my small condo sized shared garage/workshop I currently have. it also features a port to connect to a shop vac, and that's a plus since I no longer have a DC system (at least for the time being)



I am in need of making my own pickguards again, and found the pricing right on the Grizzly bench top model ($150 US shipped to my door) Hopefully there isn't too much chatter to this cheap unit that will keep me from making clean routing templates. The height of the table face is just perfect siting atop my JessEm router table

I'll get to give this a test drive this coming weekend.

Pardonnez mon ignorance, but what does this tool do? I can infer from your post it's used to shave/shape pickguards? What else, if anything, would this be used for? And what differentiates it from some other tool like a belt sander/grinder?

I have to admit that when I first viewed the pic and saw those brown spindles sitting atop the machine I thought they were cinnamon sticks to be put into Starbucks Lattes

here's an image of my previous Jey spindle sander in action

- thicknessing a headstock on a non-tilt style neck


- sanding the edge contour of a body

- finessing the outline of a pickguard template


essentially the sanding drum rotates and also oscilates up/down in an effort to eliminate a high grit particle on the sanding drum from leaving a scribed line on what's being sanded. the sander utilizes multiple sized drums to accommodate open and tight areas. this tool will cut the amount of hand sanding an edge by more than 80% while also maintaining an nice perpendicular edge alignment. the drums come in various grits from very coarse down to 200 grit

I consider this a must have tool for any woodworking shop making wooden router templates (pickguards, bodies, headstocks, etc ...) and bodies/necks. it's also a great tool for some kinds of furniture making projects
