The title pretty much says it all.

I recently had somewhat extensive surgery on my right shoulder. The injury was unrelated to playing, and while I'm making good progress w my P/T, I definitely do NOT want to hang a heavy bass on it anymore.

I'm looking for suggestions for an inexpensive ($200-$300 range), lightweight, full scale lefty. I'd also consider an easy flipped righty that meets my other criteria.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

For your budget and weight concerns I'd recommend an Ibanez SR series. Pretty light, comfy neck, 34" scale and decent hardware and pickups. You could find a good used one well within your price range and they're easy to upgrade pickups and hardware if necessary.

Like this https://reverb.com/item/8307887-ibanez- ... 2000-black

If you have to have 34" scale you could look for a used Danelectro DC . They pop up now and again but you might have to go a little higher than $300. But they're super light (about 5 pounds) and the Korean built ones sound surprisingly good.

Here's one currently on Reverb A tad overpriced imo. https://reverb.com/item/6821995-danelec ... er-sparkle

Thanks for the response.

've never played an Ibanez, but for some reason I've always associated their lower end instruments with being VERY poor quality. I know they have some really high quality basses, but I've always thought of their less expensive basses as if they're more of a toy. Would the GSR200 be comparable quality to the Squier line? How versatile are they?

These 2 are in your price range. You would have to inquire about weight.

Japanese Fernandes are nice and light, but a little out of your range. This one probably weighs in at 7# or even a little less:

I'll second the Ibanez GSR200. It's a solid bass and the quality tends to be a bit ahead of most Squiers in the same price range.

Keep an eye out for an SR300L or SR500L in the second hand market, as they are a major step up from the GSR200 and can be found pretty inexpensive.

scroll down a bit.. Jay's got a SR300 FOR $249. and a SR500 for $499.

This one on Reverb looks nice and only $170. https://reverb.com/item/6797339-ibanez- ... ctric-bass

SR300 Lefty at GC for $170. Might need a little TLC as I note one of the knobs has been replaced with a Gibson-esque version.

I love my Dano Korean issue Shorthorn. It's very light and sounds great, full 34" long scale. You probably would need to push your budget up to about 425 to get one but I have seen them lower.

The Dano Longhorns are even lighter and fit your budget that much better, usually mid 300's give or take. Great bass if you are OK with a short scale.

I appreciate all of the responses.

The danelectros are interesting, but they're just not....me.

I've come across several ibanez that might be interesting.
I've found two GSR200s (p/j pickups and four knobs) for under $130 (and they're not the obligatory lefty black) and and an SR300 (p/j with three knobs) for about $170 (unfortunately it black). Thoughts?

I can't seem to find much on the GSR and SR with the p/j. All of the videos are of the ones with humbuckers.

Could either of these be used in a band situation? Classic rock and 80s (Duran Duran, the Cure, etc) type stuff.

The weight saving in the GSR/SR is to some extent due to the lower body profile being as narrow as the top, which may effect comfort if you need to play sitting down. They should not be neck heavy. A good strap that holds with some friction over your left shoulder should take some stress off your injured right side.

I'd expect the P-J combination should see you good for those eras. The P alone will do most of it.

Regarding the lower-line Ibanez's... I've owned an SR800; it was solidly built, and the electronics were fine... Besides the ATK 305L I currently have, my main player is an Ibanez SR206-six-string, that I bought at an internet discount price of $220 - landed in Hawaii! It's built well, the neck is perfect, and the electronics are great for the price... in fact, I bought another SR206 when I spotted it for $200 from Sweetwater. I would say the only thing you might not like about the SR line is the thin neck.. but you really can't find a better bass for the price range... worth checking out at a local music store....

I would recommend Ibanez as well. The SR300EL and SR370E in their current offering are both available left handed, and are quality instruments with lightweight contoured bodies, thin necks and versatile electronics paired to two humbucking pickups with a coiltap switch. I especially like the 370, with a maple body in a nice burst finish.

You aren't going to find anything lighter than a Hohner B2 series, and they are built rock-solid, so there is no need to worry about quality.

I appreciate the input all.

I've decided that at the moment I'm going to focus on the one bass that I already have and love. It's a Hohner Jack that's headless and is relatively easy to play inverted, and weighs a little under 9 pounds.

So now my quest is to find the best affordable strap that "lightens" the bass. :-)

Again, thanks for the input!

I've got one of these you can have for the cost of shipping. I only used it for an hour before I put it away. I decided I prefer 2" straps.

I'm happy to sell my SR505 if you want it. Haven't played it in ages.

If Ronin decides not to take you up on this offer, I'd be happy to PayPal you $20 to ship it to me....
