Hi Guys - came across this luthier's website through a Stagg EUB thread on Talkbass... beautiful looking EUB's, so I took the time to email the company, and had a nice chat with the owner, Chris Balmforth, who works out of Cornwall, England. His basses are well made, sound great, and are moderately priced. Plus, he will make lefty's with no up-charge!

Here's the link, http://farwestmusicalinstruments.co.uk/ , and a link to a video where you can listen to one of his basses... it sounds surprisingly like an upright! Bass solo at 2:48... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYbvLvl ... e=youtu.be ... five-string models are available too...

It looks cool. I keep being asked to play bluegrass and jazz stuff and I am not sure I want to haul a dog house, that's an option. Even though EUB's never ever have the thump of an upright unfortunately.

True, but either because of the way this bass is built, or the way it was EQ'd, it does come very close, in my opinion, to sounding like an upright. Interesting, that in emailing with the Luthier, I shared with him that I had bought a Stagg EUB, and had a bought a Stagg EUB as well, to see if he would like playing one. He liked the experience so much, he decided to start building his own... I think he's done an outstanding job!

You could always mute the strings more via foam. That's what I did with my Stagg EUB and it does get thumpier as a result.

I've been doing some country/bluegrass gigs lately using my PBass with flats and medium high action and truthfully it sounds really nice. I'd love to look into a small bodied upright like a 1/4 or 1/2 size, not only for the sound but also for the visual aspect.
I probably should visit with our resident expert - string instruments repairman LHBASSIST - who lives close to me and ask him what my options are.
