Why not get the best of both worlds and install a Proto Guitars Hybrid?
How would that compare totally to splitting the coils of an MM?
The coils are voiced way differently, so you do get a true J bridge PUP tone and the MM tones as well. The Proto I installed sounds nothing like my EB Sterling bass when coils are split.
Here's a demo of the PUP in action.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kMYvCWg4rUFor those of you that do not know Howard Ulyate and his pickups "Ulyate Pickups" video link above, they are freaking killer. Howard does his own winds and custom pickups and one of the nicest guys you would ever meet. I had him rewind my 75 Jazz Pickups and they sound HUGE. His pickups are top notch and I would put them up against ANY pickup vender out there today. Just my 2 cents. He can make you what you want. I have a set of dual coils in an EMG DC40 shell built for my Fretless thumbslam is finishing for me. The Ulyate logo is in the proper location Lefty too. He could reverse the MM pickup orientation as well.
