I've heard about the Japanese E series quality but didn't know that the American made had the E in the serial.
From the seller:
his Left Handed Precision Bass has a 1 3/4" wide neck at nut - this was a special order. There is only a surface scratch to the head area around bass of E post. No other blemishes to be found. I have had this as a back-up to my other Precision. It is time to sell, I had played this about 10hrs, played only at my home. A hard case comes with bass. Serial # E 318543

In the case of the USA ones, that's E for Eighties, and 3 for '83, just like you have the S for Seventies, N for Nineties, Z for Zeroes. They've abandoned this system in 2010 though, and currently start their serials with US and the last two digits of the year of manufacture.

Cool thanks for the info Jeroen!

FYI, Those basses have a very wide flat C profile neck. You ether love 'em to hate 'em.

What is noteworthy about E series quality?

Some year ago i purchased an identical bass from the US, the serial was E3185xx like this one.

Probably at a certain point they did a batch of lefties.

Soon i got rid of it because it wasnt remarkable from a sonic point of view, it lacked the typical growl of a 70s P Bass.

I have one of these basses, it's the second bass I ever purchased, I got it used in 96 and I agree you either love or hate the profile of the neck. For me it was my first Fender and although I love my Ric it was the first time I had that Fender Sound. It's a great bass.

Did they come stock with the white pickup covers? I never liked that look.
Otherwise a sweet looking bass! Looks like Fender brand flats on it too. I love those.

Yes, My Bass also has the white Pickup covers, I don't like the look either. I modified to a Perloid Pickguard but I am planning on going back to the original white pickguard.

Nice Bob!
It'll look cool with an aged tort guard and black PU covers!
Maybe even with a spitfire pickguard but those are too expensive!

I'm a sucker for a pearloid p/g, almost makes those white pickups look good! If it was mine I'd keep that p/g and swap out the pickups.

I bought one in '84; it was my first "real" bass. I hated it. It was pretty, and very well built, but I hated the neck, and it sounded puny. I kept the damn thing till '91, when I traded it in towards a new Soundgear 800.

Reminds me of the 1974 P-bass I bought in 1976.. never liked it, and traded it in the early '90's straight across for SR 800... And now, '74 P-bass worth $2000, SR 800 worth $250.... who knew?! Oh well.... :)
