The guy just offered to sell it to me for $300. I don't live in Boston so he'd have to ship it. Don't think he will so anyone here within driving distance to Boston who's looking for a lefty upright, I'd grab it if I were you.

Hey Tom, the closest one from that place is Tim, second one is me.
So whatever works, if Tim cannot make it I'll pick it up for you.

Thanks man but I'm not interested in buying it. I was just putting it out there for anyone who's interested in buying it. You should grab it Paulo. Seems like a good deal.

No worries man. I'm good for now. Plus I wouldn't buy it without playing it first. Upright's can be tricky.

Engelhardt is the first company that comes to mind when I think of lefty upright availability. I believe that back when Matt bought his the consensus was that Shen made a higher quality instrument, but I can't vouch for newer Engelhardt's. They do seem to be more readily available, however, and lefties can be ordered in any model. Bob Gollihur can get them, starting at $1549 for the EM-1 or EC-1 models up to the ES-9 Swingmaster at $2149. I've seriously thought about getting a Swingmaster. Such a sharp looking bass in that blonde finish. Reviews I've read online are pretty positive, and it's supposedly made in the US, though I'm dubious:

I've also wanted a swingmaster for years. That blonde finish is dead sexy.

Just looked at the Swingmaster/Goliher page, and agreed - the blonde finish is beautiful!

From the page:

Image3/4!?!?! I want a FULL SIZE BASS!!
No. You don't. Probably 99.5% of the basses on the planet are 3/4 size; it is the most-recognized "regular size" upright bass. The scale length (length of the string that speaks, from the slotted nut at the top at the fingerboard to the bridge) is 41.5 inches, and most other 3/4 size basses are in that same 41-42 inch range. "Full size" or 4/4 size basses usually have a longer scale length, and the body is larger, and frankly, there isn't a significant advantage, if any -- and you'll have a helluva time playing it and reselling it. Unlike the Olympic Diving competition, there are no extra points for degree of difficulty in bass playing! ;-)

Good to know! Not that I have any intention of trying to learn upright any time soon, but I still enjoy knowledge for its own sake.

My girlfriend thanks you. We were at the "where are you gonna put it?" stage of the conversation.

Haha!

At least she is not using it as an excuse to buy another Coach bag or pair of shoes or something!

Hey guys!
I tried this bass out and it was a super cool thing but not for me!
I tried to get shipping estimate and it turns out to be very expensive and difficult to pack.
So if anyone is near the Boston area and whiling to give it a shot I would be happy to pass it along!
This is a proper conversion to left handed btw.
I'm gonna put up for sale on Reverb with a higher price so I can get offers for it but would be happy to pass it to a board member for what I paid for of course.
It comes with the amp hookup, an extra set of used strings and a gig bag big enough to sleep 2 in it

Oh man that is soooo tempting! I have never played an upright, but have always been drawn to them!
2 questions,

1. What did it end up costing you?
2. Would you have any interest in trades?

It cost me only 300 bucks.
I would be totally down to trades but for a little more reasonable value bass.
If you like to come by and check it out let me know and I'll shoot you a message!

Yeah I would love to check it out, thanks! I have a few options for trades we could talk about. Please message me, I am new around here and haven't figured out how to message yet.

Thanks!

FYI: The most knowledgeable member about uprights on this forum is LHBASSIST who is a string instruments repairman in Reno (Dave Edwards). There is an older thread where he shared his expertise about lefty conversions if anyone is interested.
