Neck looks awesome but body seems like could use some TLC..

Sooooooo....

(I know, what am I doing still shopping for basses, right?)

...I just got off the phone with the seller. Very nice guy; very excited about this bass. He's in Damascus, southeast of Portland. His buddy listed the bass for him.

A long-distance sale might be tricky, though. He's skeptical about a PayPal transaction, and I'm skeptical about his skepticism! :D

Anyone in the area who's interested should definitely give him a call, though.

Interesting - the body does look a little worn - mojo I guess :) Any pics of the neck? If that is ok it should be fine. It looks like the maple FB version of my SB-1.

Just bought the Japanese Fender bass from the Craigslist listing posted recently... when I first emailed the seller and got no reply, I realized that by telling him I would send the money thru PayPal, and have a friend pick it up, it sounded like one of those old offers where someone is currently working on a game reserve in Africa, will send a certified check, have an associate pick it up, etc. So I emailed him again, he gave me his cell #, and sure enough, when I spoke to him, that's exactly what he thought was happening!

To calm his fears, I agreed to PayPal the sale amount to my friend in the Bay Area, who transferred the cash to his checking account, then met the seller on Saturday to pick up the bass for me (he's mailing it out to me Monday...).

So, this type of sale can be done, but having someone to look at the bass first, pick it up, and mail it, is the best way to go - that way everyone is happy.

Yeah, for sure. My brother-in-law helped out with the Warwick I just snagged in Denver. But that was easy because he does odd jobs and is always freeloading off of us :)

These are on top of my favorite basses. Thunderous and light. Yep. I sold one... sigh.

Funny everyone keeps saying those SB's are light. My SB-2's ash body weighed a ton! It's nice and compact, but it was really really heavy. Not as heavy as my Stingray 5 and my '81 MC924, but definitely my heaviest bolt-on 4-string.

Soooooooooo..... It's been a strange week.

This bass it's on its way to me. I even have tracking info. But I haven't actually paid for it yet.

The seller had never used PayPal before and got frustrated with something about the withdrawal process, so he called PayPal and told them to refund my money. But then he went and shipped the bass anyway. ("My buddy's waiting with the car and I'm @#$%ing sick of screwing around, man! I'm bringing to FedEx now. Sorry for cursing, I know you got kids.") He gave me his banking info so I could wire him the money after I get the bass, which should be Thursday or Friday.

I've had five or six conversations on the phone with him since last Sunday, which at this point makes him among my closer friends. I'm going to miss him a little once this transaction is complete.

I don't doubt it. My favorite sounding bass with my new rig is my Squier with a G&L pickup. But I don't like the skinny neck on the Squier. And I want a real G&L! :D

It's here. It's the real deal. First picture is just a teaser.

Haha!

"Hey boys, daddy got you a present!"
"WHAT IS IT?"
"It's a box!"
"A BOX! YAAAAAAY! THANK YOU, DADDY!"

"Sweet. That ought to buy me a few minutes to go play this new bass."

I'm supposed to be working today, but both kids are on vacation so it's a real pain in the @$$. But I managed to throw on a set of my preferred strings and give it a quick setup. It was set with very high action, which I worried might be hiding a problem with the neck. Nope :) Truss rod turns smoothly in both directions, and I got a nice medium-low action with no buzzing. No dead spots. Electronics sound exactly as they should. And by that I mean they sound REALLY good.

The neck is gorgeous. Flamed maple under a glossy dark tint. It's a two-piece neck, but the seem is very hard to see. Wide (1 11/16 at nut) but thin front to back; not what I was expecting, but it works for me.

The body, however, is beat to spit. Exposed wood on the top and bottom edges with lots of small dents on the upper horn that I can't figure out. I have no idea what would dent it like that. There appears to be a cigarette burn on the back of the body (one on the headstock, too). I don't mind and it doesn't affect my feelings about the purchase, but I'm thinking it might be a good candidate for a refinish.

So there it is. My first USA bass, and one that almost qualifies as vintage :D

Exactly!  And giving my daughter the old strings to play with bought me enough time to do a quick setup with the new strings.

They are great sounding basses. Enjoy it :) If you refinish the body, what color do you think you would go with?
