That is a steal. If I was in the area I would buy it just for that reason.

Just sent the seller a reply email, that if I'll buy it through PayPal, and have a friend who lives in his area pick it up for me.... we'll see what happens!

Been emailing back-and-forth with the seller throughout the day... looks like he's going to work with me through a bass-buddy I have in San Mateo, who can pick it up. Complete story to follow soon!

So have "sealed the deal" with the seller. Acting through a friend who lives in the Bay Area... money sent to him through PayPal. He'll pick it up this weekend, then send it to me, so it will be a couple of weeks before it arrives here, but am excited to get a nice bass so cheap! :D

Bass has been picked up by my bass-buddy, and will be mailing it tomorrow... seller sent me some pics just before my buddy got there, so I'd know exactly what I was getting....

Image

A little belt rash - no big deal....
Image

Surprise! - it got dropped at some point in it's life....

So, now I know why it was such a good price! But, I'm more interested in the bass itself, and, being a finish carpenter, I've been looking at chip repair videos online, have a good guitar tech/buddy to refer to, so I'm confident I can repair this, and make it look literally like it never happened... will document the process and post up...

Good thing it's on the black side!
To me it still a steal at that price, the MIJ now are being sold for as much as the MIA basses.
It's crazy how the sellers simply jack up the prices and everyone else jack up theirs too...

Wow, that thing looks like it took a stage dive into the pit and everyone moved away. But I agree it's still a steal!

I hope you post pictures after the repair.

Interested to see how the repairs go/turn out, but I do love me some honestly earned battle scars, even on poly finishes. A lot of people don't like the way it sort of breaks off jaggedly, but it looks punk to the core to me!

Congrats, also food for thought would be get it refinished. I have had a few guitar and basses refinished. Both were purchased for under $400 so even with cost of the refinish you are still ahead on resale and you get the color of your choice. Here is my Fender Japan Jazz as well as Fender US Strat both were dinged and scratched when I got em.

Beauty marks are one thing - in my case, these "dings" are more like beauty warts! :) Bobjones has a point, and it's tempting to consider a refin, as it wouldn't hurt the resale on a MIJ Fender I'm sure, and might even increase it if I picked a more desirable color... however, for now, I'm going to try the repair route, as I have nothing to lose, and experience to gain... and besides, other than my time, there is minimal cash outlay in materials. Wish me luck! :D

Great stuff, Matt and others have great points for me I have several basses that are dinged, the nice part is for my 80 Ric, I purchased is new May 12th 1980, still have it, bunch of dings but I know where each and every one of them is from. I am not a fan of show room new, when I get a bass refinished, I dig the look then play gigs, jam and get new dings that are mine. The one thing that always drives me crazy is when basses are dinged not from gigging, stage stuff, but from just being careless or sloppy.

I've been watching a lot of videos on youtube the past week. Everything from this very professional video from Stewart McDonald for small dings -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTVScFJoe24

to videos like this one for larger chips -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr2kUhVekxU

And one more - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjjIlyn6-8k

What I'm seeing is various ways, materials, and techniques to fill in dings and chips. Because my chips are so large, I'm going to have to build up the glue over several days. Because the color wasn't sprayed on the wood, but is in the poly coat itself, I think what I'll try is build up with super glue, then, on one of the last applications before I get flush with the top, I'll either mix some color in with the glue, or lightly spray the color in the repair, let it dry, then continue with the glue.

I'm also going to talk with my local guitar tech buddy, and get his input. If it doesn't come out as well as I'm hoping, at least it's in an area that's not readily seen, and, I'll at least be building some strength back into those areas, which I believe will strengthen the poly coat, and keep more from falling off.
