But then so much metal flake!

Some of the imported righty tributes have pick guards that actually look pretty good. The way the one on the ASAT was cut doesn't work as well.

I would just remove the pickguard. Since I've had one without it and liked it a lot it is just weird to look at the same bass with a pickguard!

You could have one made based on a fender P bass design. Extend it thru the control area.
