If you never played one words cannot describe, they never get the dollar amount they are worth. They are great basses and for me (I have 3 G&L's) the L2000 is amazing playing as well as versatile for sounds.

They're also wonderful platforms for tinkering, including turning it into an elusive 1k with just a bit of soldering and the throw of a switch. Single-coil modes, etc.

True, great bass! Even the Indonesian Tribute is great.

I have both the Trib and the US version. One I paid used -like new- for $300; and one I custom ordered from G&L for some $1400.

There is a difference but not as much as the price difference would indicate. If you want to get the feel of the l-2000, maybe not a bad idea to start with the Tribute before splurging $1400. To my knowledge, same pups, same electronics in both models.

Unless you can find a good deal for the US version as the one offered here...

I believe the pups and the preamp are the same. But the pots are different, which matters if you want to swap them out, although there's no intrinsic need to as they work fine.

You are right and now that I remember I did buy the pots to make it exactly the same as the US version but was confronted to two issues:

1- I believe the shafts are different so you also need knobs and second, most importantly;
2- I could not feel any bloody difference between the two pots so I reversed it back to original...

PJmuck had a tribute series for sale, i regret i didn't buy it at the time. I had the Asat bass and loved the way it played and sounded but it still wasn't the one for me so i sold it and now i finally had a chance to buy a tribute series at a great price on CL. I'm very surprised with how awesome this bass is!

Well, nobody here bought it obviously, the auction ended and it is now back again on eBay for the same starting price...

That's G&L's proprietary bi-cut neck design, where a one-piece neck is cut in half to install the truss rod from the side rather than through the back or under the fingerboard. They claimed these necks withstood warping better, and handled string tension better. On necks with a maple fingerboard, the cut would extend through the front of the neck as well, as they wouldn't have a separate fingerboard.
They stopped using this method some years ago.

I have one of those with the bicut neck and maple fingerboard. It is something they haven't done for a long while. The one in the bay auction though looks like it's cut not right down the middle which is odd. It might just be an illusion because of the photo. Mine is an '83 SB-2; neck is very stable - here is a pic:
