Not that it's an automatic deal breaker, just a good thing to be aware of.

I believe the seller is honest. I contacted him to ask if he had the original pup (I have a hard time understanding how you can "upgrade" a pup on a Stingray: either you like to sound as is, or you should consider another bass). Anyway, he replied immediately and does have the original pup tp go with it. In case somebody here is interested... He was pro in his answer and even offered to install the original pup back if I wanted...

What in the hell happened to the headstock on the blue one, I wonder?

I like the sound of a stock Stingray and have one stock, but I also have one that I changed the pickup and preamp in. You can get aftermarket pickups that can give you better clarity, more or less of certain eq points, warmth, sparkle, etc. all without losing the inherent character of the stingray sound.

In my case the swapped pickup and preamp are both closer in tone to the 70's Stingray sound. Both basses sound killer and while you can tell their tones apart, they are both all Stingray in sound.

I had 2 Stingrays; an '80 and a '96. The '80 was the one I recorded with as it always sounded perfect; I used the '96 live because it was lighter, but I really disliked the the preamp; I tried changing it out with other 3-band preamps, but it never sounded like I wanted it to,so I sold it and went back to using the '80 live.

^^^^^^ What dano said! Agree on this speculation as I also didn't care for the 3-band preamps.

Interesting to know that you can upgrade your pup in a Stingray and not lose the original sound of it. I always thought that doing this would make your Stingray no longer sound like a Stingray. I was obviously wrong...

I understand the thinking, I'm the same with certain kinds of basses.

I always felt like you couldn't/shouldn't mod a Spector bass because it'd lose the Spector sound but I bought Gravebass' Spector 4 string that he put an Aguilar preamp in and it still sounds 100% Spector. I think certain aftermarket tweaks can lessen the tonal character a bass is known for but others can compliment and enhance it.
