I couldn't find the original thread that had the factory picture of a rack of these lefty 4003's. Here's 3 of them on ebay.

So this store in the UK orders 3 of them for stock and the price gets stupid to get them back over here to North America where they came from. What a joke.

Hey Mark - were you able find out if you can just order a lefty version of one of these from a US dealer? Should be a lot cheaper

Back in April, a fellow Rick enthusiast recommended Dave's Guitar Shop (http://davesguitar.com). They quoted me only $1899. I'm not sure if that included shipping or not as I never pursued it any farther. The 12-18 month lead time they estimated seemed so far away. Now, here we are! I almost wish I would have ordered one now, but I love my 4003, which I already had, and I never buy a bass assuming I can sell it for enough to justify the risk of not liking it.

I am really curious as to what they sound like. I'm sure it's very close to the standard maple, but I would like to give it a try just to see if it has any noticeable character to it. If the walnut doesn't give it any extra of that signature Rick grind/growl/belch that I love, then I will pass. If it does, I might quickly develop a serious "life priorities" problem.

None of the other $2000+ Rics that have been sitting on ebay for the last year have been sold, and I doubt these will, either.

@Brian: I'm pretty sure anybody can order whatever they want. I may yet do that. Nobody here (I've spoken to two dealers in the US) say they have one. It just seems to be so shortsighted to ignore the lefty community here in North America and not have built at least 2 or 3 for this market. Now that I have a walnut bodied bass (my Carvin IC 5) I wouldn't hesitate to get another one. Walnut has a very similar tone to maple but with just a bit more warmth.

If I was going to order one though I would probably do it through a Canadian music store. They're about $500 cheaper than the ones on eBay through the US retailers.

By the way, I've been to Dave's... don't ask me why as it's in LaCrosse Wisconsin. Nice store.

Mark - have we seen pics of your Carvin Icon? If not, please? I have 2 Carvins, an LB70 which is walnut and an SB4000. I like em both. I really like the look of the Icon, so am curious about them.

I had actually asked them to quote me a 4003W with gold 4004 hardware (bridge, knobs and tuners), but they said Rickenbacker doesn't do custom orders. If they could have gotten that for me, I probably would have ordered it.

In reality, any company can do a custom order. You just need the right combination of fame and money :?

My suggestion - if you really want the walnut Ric - would be to order it as is, and then replace the bridge and tuners with the drop in Hipshot replacement stuff. Their Ric replacement bridge is WAY better than the original Ric one AND the ABM one they use on the 4004. So are the tuners. I'm positive they'd both be available in gold if you asked nicely. In the end you'd probably end up spending less than whatever "custom upcharge" Ric would charge if they did offer such a service. Just my two cents....
