This one is quite old but in a beautiful shape for its age, but is it really worth this much money? I would buy myself a nice car with this money!

It is worth the money, I got a 64P bass and everything they say about old Fender basses is true, my 64P Bass has an amazing unique sound, plays great and it one of my favorite basses. The difference between this bass and a purchase of a car is that in 10 years this bass will increase in value. For a 65 Fender you have a good chance that it still has the same playability as pre-CBS fenders as I have read that they really did not start making changes till 66. Assume this bass was built by the original Fender employees.

No illusion there. Looks real high to me past the 5th fret

So it is more likely a 66. Is it me or does the sticker on the headstock look wrong? Beautiful and rare instrument either way. I might have to drive over to San Diego and take a look. Worth owning at a negotiated price.

Action looks high to me too. The truss rod pix don't show a maxed rod, so maybe it's fixable? Seller doesn't offer much info other than the photos.

And what's that shielding plate under the pickguard? Is that original? I've never seen that before, and it peaks out beyond the guard, leading me to believe it is not original, though perhaps the pickguard has just shrunk over the years?.

The shielding plate is definitely an original part.

Action is definitely sky high on all strings. But it's a gorgeous bass, and it doesn't look like the truss rod is turned in too far.

It might be just a poorly set-up. I see that on the G string saddle, the outside screw is higher then the inside screw. It should be the other way around to follow the radius of the fingerboard.

I hope it is just a bad set-up because this bass looks awesome

I can see now that the saddle height adjustment screws are pretty sunken in far down in the saddle(s), indicating a pretty high setup. (See the outer E string saddle screw for comparison).



Interesting. Is there a time line for when Fender switched from shielding plates to adhesive/glued backed shielding? My '73 P has adhesive/glued shielding under the pickguard.
