I figured since there's nothing about this forum linking us all together in a musical sense that it would be interesting to have a "currently listening" thread to see where everyone's tastes lie and maybe discuss bands.

I'm currently listening to these quite a bit:

Sigur Ros - the newest leaked album
Amenra - Mass III
Tera Melos - Drugs to the Dear Youth
Don Caballero - American Don
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Wolves In The Throne Room - Diamdem of 12 Stars
Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone

how about you?

I just picked up the last Noxagt record, and other than that it's been a lot of the Smiths and Joy Division in the car lately.

how's the new sigur ros treating you? that first freak-folk song kinda surprised me at first but I gotta say the whole album might be the best yet IMO.

p.s. king's X = fantastic

Well, with a 2 year old daughter now I'm listening to a LOT of Raffi. But I did make a mix CD for her comprised of stuff I like with a decidely child-like slant:

Beatles - Yellow Submarine, Rocky Raccoon, Good Day Sunshine, Nowhere Man, All Together Now
XTC - That's Really Super, Supergirl, Cherry in Your Tree, Goosey, Goosey
Tally Hall - Banana Man
Cake - Mahna Mahna
Queen - Bicycle Race (sans the x-rated video)
Outkast - Hey Ya
Jackson 5 - ABC
Moxy Fruvous - Spiderman

And when I ever get a moment to listen to my own stuff, I'm enjoying the latest from King's X, Death Cab, Elbow, Coldplay, and Weezer.

I listen to a bit of everything. Always been a big Beatles and Rush fan. Waiting on a CD called Undergroundalienbass that features a recent fave named Bill Clements.

There's more I listen to, but my coffee hasn't kicked in yet, sorry. I'll add as I remember :)

picked up some Rage Against The Machine last week. Great bassline in the stuff, but I wasn't too keen on the lyrics.... think I'm old.

which album? the lyrics on the early stuff were great IMO. later on started to sound like he was doing an impression of himself. Either way, I can see how the style and anger could be off-putting. Not my favorite band... haven't even listened to them in years, but 10 years ago they were definitely up there for me.

Self titled Album. Looks like it came out in '92 it I read this right. I get that lyrics are part of the music style... it's just not my thing. My 21 year old son loves them....

While we're on the topic.... what kind of recommendations do others have for music with strong basslines to listen to?

Here's a few bands with IMO some really great basswork... (btw there's many genres there, so try them all even if you don't like some):
Death From Above 1979
Morphine
The Chinese Stars
Shellac
Weather Report

some good bands with good bass lines. well there is a drone bass drum duo named OM(ex members of sleep if your into experimental metal or anything close to that you may enjoy it).

peach is a pretty good mid nineties prog metal band, bass player from tool.

for me its been:

tom waits(awesome!)
om(bass drum)
big black(math rock)
neurosis(DOOOOOOOOMMMMM)
tool
sleepytime gorilla museum(prog-experimental stuff. singer makes most of the bands instruments and plays a 7 foot bass with piano strings and he plays it with two sticks. pretty interesting.)
fugazi( the definition of independent music)
captain beyond( 60s/70s rock. really good stuff)
and of course.. charles mingus.

i cut it short cause im a new guy.. :D

ps if you like metal at all there is a left handed bass player that is absolutely amazing in a band called intronaut. here is his music page he also does live jazz stuff if your interested.

http://www.myspace.com/joelesterbass

looking for help on getting better at the bass. just put the pick down and im now learning some progressions but im kinda stuck. any help?

rob
