Faded and glossy SGs are available. Although the price difference is extreme, to the tune of about $600 more for the glossy. There are some other improvements to the bass, but as I recall my conversation with Jimmy, the bridge, electronics, neck, etc. are the same. The tuners were different. I don't recall other specifics though. There are pictures of both on Southpaw's Facebook page; not together though, you have to scroll around to find them.

Is the faded a satin finish? If so, you can buff it to a semi-gloss. Not as high as a true gloss, but definitely glossier.

They say it won't be available in Europe and you'll have to buy it used from folks in the US at twice the price we paid plus shipping...just kidding

Has anyone got any specifics on whether there are other finish options available for TBirds besides sunburst?

Unfortunately some of us dinosaurs are not on Facebook. I'd sure appreciate if any of you guys volunteer to put a post in this thread that lists/ summarizes current verified Gibson data on:

- available models ( I've heard SG- faded and deluxe, Les Paul, and Thunderbird?)
- available finish options for each model ( not sure on SG deluxe and Thunderbird?)
- purchase price and deposit required for each model ( not sure on SG deluxe and Thunderbird?)

I've seen the following thus far:

2012 SG BASS FADED
Body: Mahogany
Neck: Mahogany
Fingerboard: Unbound Rosewood 30” scale
Electronics: T-Bird Plus and Vintage style T-bird mini
Hardware : Chrome three point adjustable bridge and Grover shamrock style tuners
Satin finish
Hardshell case
left handed version

MAP $ 799
Retail $1,399
Finishes:
Worn Cherry
Worn Ebony
Worn Brown

2013 GIBSON LES PAUL BASS

Body: Mahogany /“Traditional” weight relief
Top: Maple
Neck: Mahogany, ‘50s Rounded taper, with larger headstock
Fingerboard: Bound Rosewood, Trapezoid Inlays, 34” Scale, 20 Frets
Hardware: Chrome Bass Tune-o-Matic, Grover Bass tuners
Electronics: Dual chrome covered TB Plus
Plastics: Cream, Amber Top Hat knobs
Case: Hardshell
Available in left-handed version
Finishes: cherry Burst, Ebony or Goldtop

MAP $1,599 ($1,749 Gold)
Retail $2,699 ($2,899 Gold

-What about ordering thru dealers other than southpaw ( not sure on this?) Saw they posted the following:
We just put in an order for 2013:
TBirds in VS
SG Basses in cherry
SG Faded Basses in Cherry and Brown
Les Paul Bass in Gold Top

Any idea what quantities they ordered? Are they only taking deposits/ orders on what the order they put in, or can you order other available options thru them?

Carmine, I can't see why any lefty friendly authorized Gibson dealer would not be able to order you one. I'd call Wilwood Guitars or Eddy's if i were you. Wildwood is a very lefty-centric store. So much so that they have about a dozen lefty Gibson Joe Bonamassa Les Pauls sitting in their inventory. And a buttload of the recent Tribute lines. They also have 4 MG Ric 4003's on hand. They had about 6 ES 330's with P-90's at one point, but those guys got sold in about two weeks.

Carmine, where did you find those spec sheet listings?

I called Gibson and was told that all their authorized dealers can order you left handed instruments. This is not a Southpaw Guitars exclusive.

I suggest calling Gibson with any questions. The call is toll free and I think the more inquiries about the lefty basses they get the more they'll be encouraged to have accurate information on hand and get the idea there's definitely interest about these basses out there.

Andrew, I got those specs from a buddy who copied them from Southpaw's Facebook page. He said he didn't see any specs posted there on the Tbirds, other than that Southpaw had ordered some sunburst ones.

Your points about calling Gibson are EXCELLENT ones. I will be doing so-- and speaking as a Marketing executive for a large corporation, I personally encourage everyone on this board to please make that call (and ask any other lefties
you know to do same) even if you're not willing or able to make the purchase right now. Trust me when I say that whoever at Gibson convinced the "suits" and "bean counters" that this was a good idea likely has someone in Marketing compiling and presenting any favorable data points and stats that support this decision. They will need ALL the help we can give them.

I don't want to digress in this thread, but your comments about Gibson brought back to mind a recent "why bother with lefties" thread, where some folks went after Mcarp555 pretty hard regarding what some saw as his overstated comparisons on lefty discrimination. But by focusing on that aspect of disagreement, I think a larger point went somewhat overlooked: Changes that are perceived to solely benefit a minority almost always take more effort to achieve, and in most cases eventually occur because there are enough extremely passionate (some might even say overzealous) individuals committed enough to maintaining the noise level and sustaining the energy and effort it takes to refuse to accept the status quo. Even when the more "silent" members of the minority are generally in agreement with/and would benefit from the change, they frequently aren't willing to fight as hard for it- but will happily reap the benefits when the change happens. So in that spirit I express my gratitude to Mcarp555, as well as everyone else who's remained passionate enough over the years to keep making the calls, writing the letters, and using any other means necessary to keep making their voices heard in the face of decades of apparent indifference. As lefties we're all on the same team, and while there are no doubt other additional contributing factors in play at Gibson, I'm confident that we've all had some influence and impact- and there are a whole lot of less zealous lefties out there who are about to be a lot happier as a result! :)

I get the feeling Gibson is in a desperate cash generation mode.

All the big retailers are drastically discounting instock Gibsons and from what I hear the outrageous smaller dealer buying commitments have been scaled back. Both Gibson and FMIC (recently failed IPO) are inextricably linked to the not-so-healthy Guitar Center.

Will be interesting to see what emerges after first quarter 2013...

are they allowed to sell outside US ?

i think their original ric partnership (now renewed) was canceled because they sold basses overseas (some years ago i asked them for a lefty montezuma brown 4003 they had in stock, but unfortunately i never made the purchase ... :( )

Jimmy told me he quit being a Ric dealer once they stopped taking lefty orders a few years ago and refunded all his deposit money, which according to him was over a hundred grand.

Hey guys,

2 days ago I wrote an e-mail to Gibson to ask if it's true that there will be some left-handed Basses in 2013 because I would be really interested in a thunderbird. (I also asked if they will be available in Europe, but they didn't recognize that I think :D )

Here's their answer:

Thanks for writing!! Yes, Gibson has plans to build all basses in left-hand for 2013.

I still don't know what to think about this response as I can't really believe that Gibson will build ALL basses for us lefties in 2013  But that doesn't mean that I wouldn't appreciate that :D
