Further update, just got an email from the fellow directly, he saw my posting on the Twin Cities Stolen Musical Instrument Facebook page and gave me his name and number and has told me that he wants to give me my bass back, no reward needed.

Fingers crossed. :? 8-)

Wow! That IS good news! this story is worthy of the 6:00 O'Clock news! :o

Holy $#!t. :o That's amazing news!

I'd be curious how this guy came into possession of it though. Seems to me if there's a chance to prevent others from becoming victims it' might be worth it. Are you going to take it back no questions asked or pursue it further?

I spoke to the fellow this morning. He told me he got it from another guy and had his suspicions and didn't pay very much. The timing of when he acquired it does coincide with when it was stolen. He really doesn't seem to know very much about musical instruments and that's no crime.

He has NOT asked to be compensated for the money that he is out of pocket on from his original purchase (I suspect that the person he bought it from is the real perpetrator) but has only asked me to pay for shipping... actually, I offered, he DIDN'T ask. So I think his heart is in the right place.

Bottom line, the guy wants to get the bass to me ASAP... like today.

Here's the rub... the police officer that I gave the serial number to, correctly I might add as that is NOT a mistake I would make, neglected to write the last 2 digits of the number down in his report. You know the cops, they won't make a move until they are 100% certain. He asked me to contact the manufacturer to verify that there was no other bass made in another year (last 2 digits are the year) with the same first part of the serial, so I contacted Hans Peter Wilfer... he got back to me but I'll be damned if can understand his response.

Anyway, I don't believe the fellow that has my bass is the guilty party but of course he wants it out of his possession as possession is 9/10 of the law, as they say. My thinking is that if he WAS the guilty party that he wouldn't be sending it back to me so readily without asking for some funding. Like, you know, profit, of some kind.

Wow... what an insane story! Great job to everyone involved... if I get a bass stolen, I'm contacting Gravesbass and Thumbslam before the police! There is not a lefty bass in this universe that those guys either already own, have owned, or don't know about...

As for the guy who has the bass... honestly, I would just get the bass back, pay shipping, and maybe throw him a bone of some kind to show your appreciation... even if he was involved, there's no way to prove it and it's good karma on you no matter what.

@Addison... I'm with you on that one. After speaking to him it appears that he's a married guy with a kid going to school just trying to make ends meet. So he made a mistake in acquiring this bass in the first place but realizes that and is trying to make it right. Kudos to him. I would like to make sure that, after I get the bass back and it's all good, that he's not out of pocket. It appears that he's concerned with the potential legal implications of accepting any funds.

However, I've spoken to the officer in charge and he's now considering the matter closed because I wouldn't give the guy up. Since it's closed I think it should be OK to PayPal him some gift money.

It’s really great news to know you are getting it back Mark. I do believe in Karma. One thing I learned is that I judged the guy right off the bat a scum bag and it looks as if I may be completely wrong. Next time I will try to remember to proceed with caution but we are told a story from the guy that was trying to sell it and since you would have to be pretty stupid to post something for sale on eBay knowing full well it was stolen it’s most likely a true one.

Personally I would send him some cash PayPal for sure he didn’t have to offer to send it right back to you like that. I would take care of him somehow. In the mean time I’ll get back to my lefty internet watch.

Who? What Bass? Owned Where?? Thanks Chris...... If I see an item from a fellow bassist thats stolen, heck yes I'll do what I can to get it back to them. I put all that in my shoes knowing hopefully it goes around for everyone here. Good things happen to good people. Look at that kid that had his Roscoe her stolen and got it back years later. Greg @ Rocket Music and Gard/Keith @ Roscoe payed the fee to get it back. This is a similar story....

Just glad I could assist with what little I did for Mark......

Kudos to that guy for being so cool and "karma aware". I had a one of a kind bass stolen - and then found - when I was younger and I had to rely more heavily on local law enforcement to get it back.

Congratulations on getting your baby back!

If he was single, I'd send him a $100 certificate to Hooters! But, since he's a struggling family man, the PayPal idea is a good one. Congrats for getting the bass back, and Kudos to this Gentleman for doing the honorable thing :!: :!:

What makes you think we married men wouldn't appreciate a gift certificate to Hooters? Look but don't touch. ;)

Ya, really! I can have anything I want at Hooters ... just so long as it's on the menu ....

Awesome story!
Another one for "look but don't touch" that would apply here is
"Just because you're on diet doesn't mean you can't look at the menu"

HUGE shout out to thumbslam and Gravesbass for letting me know about the ebay listing. My bass is BACK baby! What a saga...

As far as I can tell it's in the same condition it was when I left it. The only thing I need to do is intonate the bass (maybe tweak the neck), swap in some new batteries and new strings, and replace the treble pot as it's seized.

Once again the value of this community can not be understated. There are some truly classy individuals here and my thanks to you both, Joe and Jim.

This also proves that if any of you lose an instrument to thievery don't be afraid to make as much digital noise as possible.

I found this bass on the web. It got stolen. I told people about it on the web. Somebody advertised it on the web. I got it back. This could not have happened without the internet and people communicating and networking. Wow. I'm still a bit numb but very happy.

A final couple of very delicious ironic notes: I found out about getting my bass back the same day I received my divorce papers. I actually got my bass back in my hands on what would have been my anniversary.

Somehow the universe is re-aligning for me. Is it karma? Not sure but hey... :D

The lefty community is small so if something comes up missing, with all the people here searching every day... I am sure if posted, someone would shout out.. Hopefully! Joe and I did FAST!!!!!!
