Never heard of these. Are they common?

Reminds me of the BassStar Travel Bass, less a string:

Not to hijack this thread, but has anyone ever tried the BassStar? They look cool to me, but I'm guessing without any mass to help it they wouldn't sound that great.

No, these are Japanese oddities known for some great basses in different shapes & less strings. I actually have a lefty 4 Basstar, got it to lug to rehearsals in Japan, as I use the trains & buses. Compact, light, sounded reasonable but as only 1 pup in a bridge position, not exactly P sound, more nasal J. It did a decent job at rehearsals, never tried it for a gig as I always used a 5 but would give it a go as a back up if I had a 5 with me. No gigs recently so...

I bought a Basstar as well... mine has two pickups, and sounds decent, although it would sound a lot better if the pickups were better quality, in my opinion. I have some pickups laying around, but haven't gotten around to putting them in yet. The "weirdest" thing about this bass is how it hangs on the body because of the way the metal wings attach to the body. But, as a travel bass it comes in handy... I prefer 5-strings as well, and would have bought a 5-string model if it was available as a lefty. OK, back to the original thread.... ;)
