- the original version (thru 1985- maple board & headstock/ open tuners/ white pickguard) is the desirable version (see top pic) and IMO (as well as several other notable players) is one of the all-time best "Precision killers" ever made. If you find one in good working condition do not hesitate- I own and play 3 of these. The next generation (1986 and later- rosewood board, sealed tuners, black pickguard, lighter weight body), was a significant step downward (see bottom pic). I've owned a couple of these and gotten rid of them. A decent bass and looks very similar on the surface, but holding and playing side by side it lacks the all around feeling of quality and substance of the earlier version and just feels and plays much cheaper/ sounds more generic by comparision.
