I think in the late 70's, someone got to work one day at Fender, feeling plenty of empathy for us southpaws - maybe after watching a documentary on Paul McCartney - and decided to produce a whole bunch of Natural/Maple Precisions.
76 and 77 were big years for Nat/Maple Pbass production. I have no clue why tho I do like your theory.
There were a bunch of Nat/Maple Jazz's produced those two years as well, but in not so great a number as the Pbass's. I have seen several with blocks and binding. Most of them seem to be hiding under peep's beds.
