So I know holding on to actual CD’s is like holding on to vinyl (I still got some though because CD’s don’t sound as good I don’t care what anyone says I have A/B tested on totally ridiculous audio gear) but again I found guys dumping old CD’s on eBay for nothing man so just for like the whatever of it I just bought Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy and Led Zeppelin 2. Oh my god I forgot how insane the arrangements are and the depth of the writing and how it’s just got such attitude. I play in an all original rock thing and we talk about what’s up to date or not sounding dated….How stupid! :(

After an hour or so I just think newer music is missing what was put into recording like this. I know that a huge generalization but I have satellite I know what is being pumped out to the masses. My God John Paul Jones is ridiculous man so creative but not ever stepping out of the music or pocket. I guess it’s my age showing but I think I’ll be spending the next few weeks with my head buried in this stuff.

Vinyl is still popular today in the right circles.

I think there is music being made today that's as interesting as much of the music of yore, but it's not as easy to find as it used to be. You mostly won't hear it on the radio or tv, but it's out there.

I would dig checking some of it out for sure I’m always on the hunt...I listen to tons of new music in almost every genre like jazz, funk, classical, metal just about everything and I hear overall an improvement in recording as to be expected and an overall improvement in individual musicianship. Better and tighter players more technical. But the depth in the writing and sick deep grooves I miss but I guess this is all so subjective and individual.

I usually like the first movie out of a string of movies usually they had a small budget and it tends to be more about the quality of the acting and skills of everyone making the most of what they had. Then like say Terminator movies they got more and more corny but tons of computers generated visual effects. Eye candy but less substance. I guess that’s a bit of what I’m trying to convey...Or I’m just an old turd with all of my best memories tied to old crappy music that makes me feel good. :(

Nope I just listened to the worst air pollution I ever heard today it was some sort of joke I think Metallica and Lou Reed? My ears threw up. I love Tool and Radio Head and a few others but I still say it isn’t as easy as it was to find great music today ... :(

OMG! I heard that garbage last week, they actually made a full album im pretty sure its called "And you thought Reload was bad?"

as somone in my mid 20s I have to agree with you modern music is pretty terrible though one band to check out is Dr Dog they wear their Beatles influence on their sleeve. It seems like music now is more about flash then substance, using fusion as an example, people like herbie hancock and weather report could play their asses off but had melodies and solos that were so musical you could hum them, now there are bands like Planet X, and Hadrien Fraiued (spelling?) who have technical skills for days but coudn't be melodic if they're lives depended on it. Then you have rock bands like breaking benjamins?! terrible, even one of my favorite modern rock bands The Mars Volta is starting to show kinks in the armor. Give me some James Brown over Chris Brown anyday. But to be perfectly honest one modern artist that I think is over looked by musicians is Lil Wayne, he uses great jazz samples, the rhythms of his phrasing are so unique and he is a great improviser and last but not least he won a skippy. At the end of the day the majority of the stuff I listen to was made before I was born and to some extent I am content with that. Just the other day at work I showed some metal head who is in love with Dream Theater some Return to Forever (Bill Conners not Di Meola)and he loved it and couldn't believe he has never heard of them. It made me realize Frank Zappa was right "Most people don't know what kind of music they like because they don't listen to real music". Wow that was a fairly uncohesive ramble but to sum it up I agree one hundred percent, you're not old, you just have good taste.

Dr. Dog the band from Philly?...Yo I am from Philly I have seen them live and was impressed and dug it for sure. The drummer is the brother of Julie Slick who is a great female bassist who lives with my boss's son. Small world but so check it out Julie and her brother also tour with Adrian Belew in his Power Trio band so there you go Adrian Belew going right back to good old prog like King Crimson..

Here is the drummer from Dr Dog and his sis kicking it with Belew..

Dr. Dog is a good band. You guys should check out Tame Impala, modern day progressive psychedelia that majorly reminds me of 70s music. I don't know, I think there are tons of great bands out there right now that rival all the best music in history, they just don't get played much on top 40 bullshit radio. For the past 6 years I've been finding all my music to listen to on Sirius' underground/indie channel because I got tired of banal terrestrial radio. They're not all gems in the underground/indie scene but it's all new music that isn't influenced by Nickelback or Limp Bizkit.

+1. Hasn't it always been the case where you had to sift through the crap (especially on commercial radio) to find diamonds in the rough? I think, generally speaking, whatever you grew up with holds more validity in your own mind than whatever's happening today, but I have no doubt younger people will be waxing nostalgic and pining for the "good 'ole days" of Britney Spears 20 years from now. But really, is it any worse than some of the sugary sap made 10-20 years ago that now sounds strangely enjoyable today (Bay City Rollers, Hanson, or even Fabian, anyone?). ;) Every generation has it's share of this, and it pains me to say that I'm now enjoying older 70's disco (Remember the "Disco Sucks" campaign?), where I once slammed it in favor of punkier leanings.

The key is to ignore popular music and listen to the underground/college stations for your source of interesting music. There's a LOT if new music out there I've discovered within the past 5-10 years that I love (Doves, Elbow, Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes, Tally Hall, Asa Ransom, etc).

Hopefully a positive spin will come out of this thread and Thumbslam will find some new bands he enjoys.

Thanks thabassment, Tame Impala is cool I dig it and man I don't mean to be negative I just go off on stuff sometimes but it's not all serious and such just ratings. I listen to music for different things and needs. I put on Pandora or Spotify and let stuff roll while I'm working at my desk and Tame Impala is a great band for that it sets a mood and loosens me up but doesn't penetrate my conscious mind that much that I can’t concentrate on paperwork or just web surfing for basses and gear and whatever.

I guess my mention of heavy listening stuff is what I was rambling on about. There are those times where it’s just all about the music when the headphones go on and the world gets tuned out and I just want to totally immerse myself in the music and I’m looking for radical ups and downs and off time or stuff in 5/8 and just music I have to pay close attention to that I can just completely escape in and I guess I’m having trouble finding that kind of stuff…but I’m not close minded to new stuff by any means there is tons of great new music but the depth of a band like The Stones, Led Zepp, Beatles, even Zappa I am not finding but thats merely my own opinion but it’s always there for me so no problem I just want to find the new heavy guys and I know they are out there maybe rehearsing right now.

Oh good God, that is terrible. I knew this album was coming out and was waiting to hear it. I had low expectations, but it is worse than I thought. Love both Metallica and Lou Reed. Seen them both in concert, have the albums. Lou Reed's voice is so bad, he makes Hetfield sound bad as well. Lou needs some higher pitched jangly guitars to sing on top of. Metallica are playing out of his (1 note) key.

There is tons of great music out there, you just won't find it on commercial radio. Like Paul Westerberg sang, it is all "left of the dial" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8hn5O7eBk4
