A P-Bass with a Jazz Bass neck will sound pretty much identical.
As PJMuck suggested it, the recent P-bass (the ones made after 2008) are much improved with the vintage mass bridge the thinner coating different truss-rod. They are a great buys. A used one go for about $900 like the one on E-bay. Black or Sunburst only unfortunately but you won't be disappointed with the tone. Good luck!

I'll third this (or fourth this if Carlos chimed in). The 2008 and newer Fender basses are really nice and can be had for under $1,000 used. Unless you want to wait a long time for a sweet deal on a 70's P, I'd grab a newer one.

If there's a Guitar Center around you you should go test drive one to see what you think of it... then buy it used elsewhere. ;)

I posted this in the for sale section, but a pawnshop in Austin has a nice '78 Precision for $800.
That's about $500-$600 under market value.

Even if you have to spend $200 to fly there and get it is still a good deal. On Ebay such a bass would for anywhere between $1,200 and $2,000. It is exactly what I was talking about. Those opportunities are hard to come by but they pop up once in awhile. No maple neck but the brown color is totally cool. It looks legit form the pictures

How about this one - Maple neck baby! Although the brown 78 is a better deal in my opinion

Interesting...

I recently change my original fender bridge (Fender Am hot rod 99), for a heavy brass Hipshot A, that my luthier recommended me.
Just before mounting it, he advised me that the hipshot wasn't string thru. As I asked him what gonna be the difference, the answer was clear : brass will make the difference, but I never really heard a difference between string thru o no string thru.

After having played extensively on my customized PJ, let's me say that I was totally right ! ;) Changing the original fender bridge is an awesome improvement, for tonality and sustain. Bad Ass bridges, made also of brass, are giving the same improvement IMHO. (another improvement is to change the pickup. A french tech/luthier - hepcat - is making reissues of old fender PU, they are really good, better than my old stock fender, norstrand or lollar, all tried on the same bass).

Sorry for the off topic...

Bajito, I have replaced the bridge on my 2000 Jazz Bass deluxe, with a Badass III which allows string-thru, it is definitely an improvement. Here is what I found out. With a good bridge (i.e the Badass) there is almost no difference between strings through body and strings through bridge. Maybe a little more sustain. With the original Fender bridge the difference was very noticeable.
Interestingly my 96 P-bass only allows the string through body option!

What is the price of a Jazz set by this French maker? (I could have someone from my family ship them over)
