Fyi, while you're in NY: I walked by Umanov Guitars today, they have a whole lefty section at the back with a bunch of Martin guitars, and several new Fender P and J, and a 4 string MM. I know these instruments are not super exciting per-se, but it's much more than the average contemporary instrument store.

And from what I hear on another BB, Umanov's should be your only 'must-see' lefty pit stop. Apparently the pickings have gotten slip in Manhattan.

30th Street Guitars usually stocks more than Umanov, but to be fair I haven't been in almost a year. It's probably more arbitrary because I don't think they sell any new instruments whereas Umanov does. Both fun stops anyway as they are a bit like museums. And 30th Street's selection of amps and stomp boxes is second to none in Manhattan. Main Drag Music is best for fun amps in Brooklyn.

I'll see if I can stop by 30th st guitars over the weekend and check out what stock they have now.

I visited drag acouple of weeks ago, a bunch of really old amps but nothing too interesting (at least for me). Also, i found them way overpriced when compared to the prices you can get online these days...

There used to be an old saying 'round these parts: "If you didn't pay enough for your instrument, you didn't go to Matt Umanov's". ;) Yes, he's pricey, and I've heard people claim they find them to be a bit snobby with regards to letting you try out instruments. They might look at your shoes and inquire if you have enough money before it's worth their while. I've been there a few times and never encountered attitude, though I never bought anything more than strings or a strap.

Of course you should also check out 48th St., particularly Rudys and Sam Ash (formerly Mannys), I was in there the other day to check out new acoustic guitars, and while I didn't happen to look for lefty basses they did have a decent amount of lefty acoustics in there. I'm seriously thinking about grabbing a Larrivee D-03R they had on hand. Blew away every Martin and Gibson I tried, IMO. There's also Guitar Center on 14th st. bet. 5th and 6th. which, while it is a GC, often has a decent stock. I'd also check out Ludlow Guitars (http://www.ludlowguitars.com/. I bought my '73 lefty P there for $600! back in '03), and Chelsea Guitars, a real hole-in-the-wall place about the size of a closet (Used to be bigger)(http://www.chelseaguitars.com/. They had a '68 Hofner there a few months ago for under $1600). And across the water in Brooklyn there's Southside Guitars where I found my Yamaha BB1200. (http://www.southsideguitars.com/)

PJ, thanks for this round up of places in NYC. I know about Sam Ash on 48th, Rudy's, and GC on 14th, but not the others, especially in the outer boroughs. I go up to NYC a lot for work, but usually do the NYC DC Trip same day. Next time I have more than an hour of free time in NYC, I'll check out some of these places, especially those in Manhattan.

Just finished a week in Chicago, great city. Seen some great blues. Off to St Louis tomorrow.
Didnt get to check any music stores while in Chicago. All a bit far from where I was staying.

Sounds like you're having a fun trip. Are you hitting Southpaw Guitars? Houston's about 3 hrs. from Austin, but when will you get another chance to see more lefties under 1 roof then you'll ever see in your lifetime again?

Last post. In flagstaff at the moment. Did all the tourist sites grand canyon, painted desert and more. Stay at an old hotel in downtown flagstaff, they have music most nights. Saw a young band on Friday night average age 16 they played some awesome funk. But a worrying trend the keyboard player played all the bass lines. I am going to jam with some locals at an open mic tonight ( need to play upside-down). We drive back to Vegas tomorrow and fly home Tuesday. Sorry I wasn't able to catch up with more leftybassist while we were here in the states.

Well that is a shame. I know that locally you have to know where they "hide" them.
