I had a little time this morning to mess around, so I thought I'd throw this together for you guys.

The Challenge: Match the sound sample with the bass that was used!
The Prize: Look cool on the internet!

The Basses:

Fender Custom Shop '64 NOS - V/V/T all set on full, stock electronics and pups, fairly new DR Sunbeam strings, alder body, rosewood board.

Warmoth Fretless (if you don't get this one, you should take up drums.) - V/V/T all set on full, Duncan Antiquity II p'ups, passive electronics, half-dead Fender Bullet strings, ash body, ebony board with no lines.

Ernie Ball/Music Man Stingray 4 - Volume on full, EQ all flat (center detent), stock pickup, stock 3-band electronics, fairly-new Elixr strings (I got these as samples when I used to test for them), rosewood board, ash body.

Zon Sonus 519 - Volume on full, EQ all flat (center detent), Bart pups, Bart ZB4 preamp, fairly new DR Sunbeam strings, ash body, buckeye top, graphite neck, phenowood board.

Mike Lull M5V - Volume on full, EQ all flat (center detent), Aguilar OBP-3 pre, Duncan single coils (custom wound for Mike Lull), mostly-dead DR Sunbeam strings, ash body, maple board.

Roscoe SKB3006 - Volume on full, EQ all flat (center detent), Bart pre, Bart/Roscoe pups, really-dead Infeld IN366 srings, spanish cedar body, pau ferro board.

Here are the samples... it's my dumb rendition of a Sugar Hill Gang classic:

SAMPLE 1
SAMPLE 2
SAMPLE 3
SAMPLE 4
SAMPLE 5
SAMPLE 6

Good luck!!!

at the risk of looking like a bung hole I will be the first to take a stab at it...

I think it's in the exact same order you listed the basses from top to bottom. I can almost bet anything on it.....I think :)

If you can guess which sample is the Zon, then maybe I will. ;)

Or not.

Nope!

Try again!

:)

I'll admit that the Zon, the Lull, and the Fender do sound very similar.

All three have the same guage and brand of strings, and all 3 have 60's Jazz bass pickup spacing.

But, to me... one sounds clean and tight (Zon), one sounds like a maple fingerboard (Lull), and one sounds big and round (Fender).

But... I'm only saying I can hear those things because I know what to look for. I probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart otherwise.

I think I'd get the SR4 right away... and the fretless and the Roscoe stick out like a sore thumb to me... so I think I might be able to guess those too, but... probably not. :ugeek:

Ahhh.... nope.

The Zon is not sample 4 either.

It's definitely not in order, but there might or might not be one or two that match up to make things interesting.

I'll reveal the order next weekend to give other people a shot at it, just in case somebody else wants to try.

:)

Too bad, I can't play the files except for the first one, the first time.

It is a fun game. I hope I'll be able to play it later. May be too many are attempting to it at the same time ;-)

Oh Sly... you're pretty close! You got two right, and the rest aren't far off.

Ok, two things...

First, I listened to "Rapper's Delight" for the first time in like 5 years today, and, other than my overplaying of all the flashy crap, man am I playing it wrong!

Second, I take back my comment about the fretless, because this is a harder game than I thought!

It's funny when you "know" every little nuance and everything about each one of your basses, but when other people listen to them they're like... "Hey man, all that shit sounds the same to me!"

So... after relistening to the clips, I can safely admit that I would probably be completely clueless on what they are too, EXCEPT for the Stingray... that one does definitely standout.

Anyone else wanna give it a shot just for fun?

To me, it's interesting just to hear everyone's take on how stuff sounds in their head.

Ok, only 2 ?

Then:

1-Lull
2-Roscoe
3-MM
4-Zon
5-Fender
6-Warmoth

I should be very close now.

Damn, i feel so dumb now....anyway, first the excuses.. i've only played a Jazzbass out of this bunch of basses, i've got otitis ear infection and let me see....no, can't invent anything else. So let me try a couple:

4 = Fender
6 = Fretless

???

Sly: You are very close... you changed one of the ones you were correct on before to an incorrect choice. So, right now, you have 3 correct... if you switch one of your changes back, then you'll probably get them all right! But... which one to change???

LefThanDed:  Very clever...

iome: BOOM! 2 for 2 right outta the gate!!! Keep going and see if you can get the other ones!!! :D
