I'm confused, is that a bass or a guitar? Because i'm looking at the string spacing and it looks like something that i could NOT play finger style. So is it a bass you'd have to use a pick with?

It's a baritone guitar... if you're familiar with a "Fender Bass VI", then it's the same idea.

Back in the Saddle - Aerosmith has a baritone guitar on the original recording played by Joe Perry

The baritone guitar is kind of a special effect instrument right? What's it primarily used for? Are there bands/musicians that use this instrument constantly as their main thing?

It's a HUGE part of The Cure's sound.

That's cool - I used to really be into the Cure back in the 80s, but I haven't listened to them in years. Still have a ton of respect for them! Do you know any songs in particular I could check out that features a baritone?

Baritone guitar is a bit of a special voice, one that I like a whole lot.
It is most prevelant in Surf/Spy (Think early "Bond" movie music) and Spaghetti Western music (Ennio Morriconi's Theme song for "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is probably the best known example, but many abound). Peter Gabriel uses them occasionally (Listen to "Growing Up" the ending guitar riff is a baritone guitar).

Baritone guitar is the middle instrument between standard guitar and bass guitar, it has an intermediate scale length (28.5 or 28.75 usually) and is usually tuned B to B or sometimes A to A.

Cheers

Here's a good example. Robert Smith's playing a Fender Bass VI:

Another example:
"The Loudest Sound" has two six string basses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi7lG2hnW80
(Both basses after 3:20 mark)

Perry Bamonte's left handed Aria bass6:

That's a baritone(B-B), not a 6-string bass(E-E) as used by The Beatles, The Cure etc.
One is a lower-pitched, longer-scale guitar, the other is a short-scale bass with two additional strings.
