I vouch for bbl, he is a great guy to deal with and takes care of his instruments. I bought my Stingray from him.
I wish I had the dough to get this one especially that I just got a gig where I am asked to only play the fretless. I does not happen very often. This week-end, I'll be backing up Sheila Fetzer (ever heard of Fetzer wines?) who will be singing at the grand opening of her new winery in the Russian River (I love those Pinot's!).

Geoff, this Sterling is just amazing. Drool! Good luck!

Thanks, Philip.

Our board member Poorlefty sold this bass to me back in 2005 or '06. He found it at a Guitar Center in Dearborn, MI, I believe - a special order that came in w/o the desired fretlines.

Sterling Ball claims it's a one of a kind piece, if that's worth anything. Some hate the color, but I find it quite delicious.

If you're looking for an active fretless with strong cutting presence, this is it. Fine adjustments with the truss rod are easy to make and enable you to get the action very low - this ain't a thumper's bass - and bring out a ton of mwah. Hexcore rounds also help, imo.

It's also fairly light, although I haven't weighed it.

It certainly has that tone (Paul Young, Don Henley 80's stuff). And don't forget Levin's work with Peter Gabriel.
