No need to feel too bad Matt. Fender CS isn't always a panacea. As I've recounted before on this board, I bought a 1993 CS slab-board Jazz used in 2001. It had been well-played, but nothing crazy. Certainly no more scars than it should have for its age. It turned out to be quite the lemon. In short order:
- the neck died; I even had the truss-rod replaced, something I didn't even know you could do, and it only bought me another year or so and was maxed out all the time
- the volume pot shorted out and had to be replaced
- 6 months later the exact same thing happened to the tone control
All of this occurred with steady 4X a week usage, but nothing out of the ordinary. No traveling, I took care of it, stored it well etc. It was just one of those things. Sometimes you just buy a lemon. Even Fender CS has them from time to time if that makes you feel better
It's lightweight body became the nucleus of a Frankenbass btw. Only the body and hardware are left from the original instrument. I'll say one thing for the CS, they love making light basses and that's great!
