Left handed 1973/74 Fender Jazz bass (original). Bass plays and sounds great. All parts are original to the instrument with the exception of the hard shell case (which while is a Fender case) I believe it’s a later year (maybe about 1976 or so). Minimal fret wear with some player wear to the body and neck finish. Overall, the bass is in excellent condition and has been professionally set up and cared for since I’ve owned it. The pots are stamped as a 1974 but the transition from 3 bolt ne to 4 bolt necks occurred in late 1973 and based upon the neck stamp serial number puts it at late 1973/early 1974. I have this bass listed for sale on Reverb but wanted to list it near at a lower price for members of the group that may be interested. Asking $4000 but will consider all reasonable offers. No trades.

Is this a 4 bolt or 3? The transition from 4 bolt to 3 bolt w/adjustment screw was approx 1975-ish on lefty basses I have seen.

It’s a 4 bolt.
The transition to 3 bolt took place in late 73/early 74 according to Fender.

Sorry, missed the pic with 4 bolt plate above.
I never heard / saw a 3 bolt in 1973 especially on a lefty.
Some 74's still had the 4 bolt and it later transitioned to 3 bolt.
I had a mid 74 Lefty with 4 bolt plate also.

REMEMBER Fender used parts in the factory to build lefty so the dates are all over the place. They used what was in the warehouse when an order came in.
It's very hard to date lefty Fenders hence the pots, etc with date stamps.

GLWTS!

There are a few lefty 73/74’s floating around with 3 bolt necks. And if you’ve noticed on the heel of the neck on mine there are 2 serial numbers. The newer looking one denotes a 74 but the lighter one behind it denotes it as a 1973. According to George Gruhn it was more than likely built in late 73 and released from the factory in 74.
