This is basically my primary bass for my gigs... The Red Ric. Obviously, if you'll ever see me post anything, my avatar is of that same Ric

It's actually really funny because before i had the red one, i started out on a righty black 4003. you know, the whole "righty strung lefty" thing. that belonged to my uncle. it was uncomfortable as hell, but it got the job done . he still has it and it's back to being righty |

IIRC, the word 'Rickenbacker' was backwards or upside-down on the trussrod cover back in the day. |

that would explain my truss rod cover, it was made by a guy my gradfather knew who once worked for the Rickenbacker plant back in the day, and they got the cover as a suprise for me. |

I thought this was pretty cool. my brother made this for me in his computer graphics class. I don't know why he picked a red fretboard though. but it still looks cool to me.

Thanks, By the Way, Jeroen, Hope this image helps. the Fretboard on my actual Ric is really weird . in certain lights it looks red and in others its brown. It's a Rosewood fretboard though. |

It's a Rosewood fretboard though. Yep, same on my Rick. It's due to the heavy lacquer-like finish that Rick uses to treat their necks. Question Rebel (and anyone else who plays an older Rick): do you still have the cap installed for the bridge pickup or have you removed it? I removed mine, and it really fattened the tone up. The newer 4003s have the Vintage Tone Circuit with the push/pull treble tone control to give you both options/sounds. I'm wondering if you can buy this tone circuitry/knob as a simple mod to an older Rick. |

Question: how come the Ric in the pictures in this thread has no fingerboard inlays, and the one in your avatar does have sharkfins? |

I haven't checked ricsource in a while, but I believe all the push-pull does is engage a capacitor into or out of the circuit. |

I did remove mine. but i do put it back on on occasion, and Jeroen, thats my friend's Ric, he also has one, I like to sometimes claim it as my own because our Rics feel exactly the same , so we sometimes swap sometimes for shows. it really messes up the crowd sometimes . but mine has no inlays. Thanks for the tip by the way pjmuck. |

Pulling out the tonepot of the bridge pickup engages a capacitor that cuts some lows on the bridge pickup and emphasises the highs and high mids, like an old 4001. |

FYI, Rick sells an aftermarket kit with the push/pull pot to engage/disengage the cap for older Ricks ($15). I just ordered mine from The Music Connection, which is where I bought my '79 Rick 4001 almost 10 years ago!: http://www.the-music-connection.com/ric ... lectronics |
