I think I know what they are since it is what I have on my bass: Fender Original "62's. Those beveled poles are unique to this pickup.

Good point, that's unusual on P-bass pickups

Yes, I had a set of the Fender originals on my Custom Shop '64 Jazz... same deal, with the beveled pole pieces.

They come OEM on a lot of the Custom Shop basses.

So it's wrong to assume that CS basses come with CS p/u's? I know it makes me an "ass" but I'm sure a lot of people like me would assume that.

As for P-bass p/u's currently available from Fender there's:

the "Original" (like I posted above and which you guys ID'd and recently acquired)

the "Pure Vintage '58" (heard of it)

the "custom shop '62" (I actually have spent a lot of time with these)

the "Pure Vintage '63" (no nothing about it)

have any of you guys spent any time with the PV '63?

is it a newcomer?

what's the story?

I personally get some awesome sesults with the Original '62's especially with my Labella FL flatwound strings. They grunt and thump with a perfect frequency balance. Since I am a pickup freak, I quite am intrigued by those pure vintage 63 pickups. There is almost nothing on them on the the web including TB.

Well now that they've been ID'd I can say I have it. So far so good in the tone dept. Haven't had them but a few weeks and haven't run them thru all the paces so the jury is still out. Using Chromes, BTW.

It's been years (10+) since I've spent time with anything other than the CS p/u.
