Hi everyone, So, I'm really interested in 6 string bass (BEADGC). As it is, the only lefty bass I've ever experienced is my Washburn T14 which I'm very comfortable with, but don't know what to look for in another instrument, let alone a 6 string. Any suggestions for a good model to start with (budget estimated $1200 tops)? Also, I love slapping, if that's a factor. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Neck width can vary greatly on a 6er. Some like a narrow neck with tight string spacing, while others prefer a wider, flatter neck for more room. For slapping, I'd definitely favor a wider neck. Some real good choices here. That Warwick Pro series Thumb looks interesting and is in my part of the world. Too bad TBP is over and hour drive from my place - if there's no traffic. If I were to recommend anything to the OP it'd probably be the Schecter Stiletto Studio. Geez, I didn't realise the Wyn 6er was still available. |

I was curious on playing a six string bass, so I bought a Carvin LB76 off ebay a year ago. I just sold it though. The extra strings wasn't my cup of tea, but the bass itself was very cool. With the Carvin, you get a US-made and very sturdy bass. Meaning it feels solid and is made of quality materials. It has a thin neck with a solid sounding b string. I have not tried other basses with b strings, so I can't compare though. But it feels good. The pups are super duper nice. This is the best part of the bass I think. You can alter the sound a lot. I like the body and headstock shape and it is very light weight. My 4 string jazz is much heavier. And the Carvins don't cost a thing!  Almost not, that is You ought to check out the blue Carvin on the board. Cheap and looks mint! |

For me, coming almost exclusively from being a 4 string player, I had to alter my playing style to employ a floating thumb technique, (i.e. moving your thumb up and down a string to anchor it vs. the typical style of keeping your thumb anchored on your pickup or above the E string only and reaching across 4 strings to pluck them). Employing the floating thumb helps you keep track of what string(s) you're on and keeps your fretting hand positions comfortable and minimal vs. having to stretch across 6 strings. Note: if you prefer the much narrower 6 string styles of a Fender VI or Schecter Hellcat VI, for example, you could keep your thumb fixed above or on the E string and reach across comfortably, but these basses are much harder to slap on, IMO, because the string spacing is so narrow. I owned a Schecter Hellcat VI for a while (since sold it), and I did not use the floating thumb technique on that bass. In the end, there's no right or wrong answer, since it all depends on your playing style and your ability to adapt to an instrument as needed. |

I wouldn't quite put the hellcat and fender VI in the bass category. baritone with extra balls is more like it. it's more a dick dale thing then an actual bass. any hoo-as far as finger style and slaps, as pjmuck pointed out, you'd have to move your left hand. I find it hard to imagine any one with hands big enough to pluck the higher string while encored on the pick up-with out leaving his comfort zone. I play a six string only. I don't own any other basses and never had, I played on a 4 lefty 4 string once (first time I played a lefty bass. also the moment I realized bass is where it's at), and played an inverted righty for a few months. so my input as to moving from 4 to 6 is pretty null. |
