| Post subject: | Gold Anodized Precision Pickguard |
Does Fender make these lefty? If not, can I get a righty, countersink the screw holes, and use it, or is the finish on the back not as good as on the front? Just wondering if anybody has any experience here. |

I don't know if they countersunk the holes or not though, but that could be easily done I'd think. |

I don't think you'd be able to countersink the screw holes on the opposite side of the guard even if it was as good looking as the front... anodized pickguards are a little thinner than 3-ply plastic guards, so I think you'd end up just drilling through. The Fender Custom shop puts these on their '57 reissues, which are available in lefty, so you might be able to get them through an authorized parts dealer. Nash also uses them on their basses, so you could try them as well. |

I HAVE TWO OF THEM! Yes, real lefty gold anodized Fender Precision bass guards! One is on a parts bass, got it from a jobber online about 10 years ago- paid about 70 bucks for it, not in perfect shape, either. I'm sittin' here lookin' at that bass as I type this. The other one, incredibly, I spotted with my eagle luthier's eye- in a pickguard bin at a local 'eye-candy'- music store. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it! The salesman happened to be one of my repair clients! I got, in perfect shape- for ten bucks! That one, is on my Warmoth P bass. I have NO idea where these guards came from, and what basses they came on from the factory. I sure wish I did... I'd like to have a few more. |

Countersinking be damned, I'd rock a righty flipped over. I remember seeing a thread about it years ago on the FDP forum. If the protruding screw heads really bugged you, you could always just use a different PG with nothing lost but the $33 minus what the guard fetches on the used market. |

I've countersunk two right handed fender gold anodized Precision pickguards & am happy with the results. I used a drillpress with a depth gauge. I used scrap material to get the right depth & drill bit size to get it to match the screw head bevel. The back side of the Fender brand guards are not a brushed finish like the front, but look pretty good. Close up they have fine swirl finish like you would see from an orbital sander. The plating is uniform. Hope that helps. |

I fitted a righty gold guard to my lefty 57RI P. The guard is single-ply with a flat edge so can be flipped over. A slight counter-sink was done on the screw holes on the reverse side. The finish isn't brushed like the proper side but matte. It still looks good and a bit more vintage in my opinion. You can view my MIJ 57RI P in the gallery section. |
