Hi fellow lefties.

I'm into buying a late 70s P Bass (1978), the headstock has Schaller branded tuners mounted. The owner says that was a common thing for lefty basses back in the 70s. This sound strange to me, as i already owned a S8 precision (well it was actually a 1980) and the tuners mounted were Fender branded.

not at all uncommon modification for that era. OEM Fender tuners weren't always up to snuff in those days.

The fact is that the guy insist the tuners are stock, and Fenders mounted them in lefty basses in the late 70s. Could it be a custom order ? Someone else told me that Schaller made the tuners for Fender in that era, but they were "Fender" branded.

Schaller made Fender's tuners but they had the Fender script on them. If it says Schaller they are most likely a replacement set.

THIS.
And yes, Schaller tuners were a common mod in the 70's
Behold, 70's modifications case study;

Schaller tuners, DiMarzio pickups w/ J-bass pup added to bridge position, BadAss II bridge, straploks. About the only thing NOT done is the finish stripped off and oil applied to the raw wood (Thank God!)
