With just one exception, over the years my various bass quests have involved websites, ebay, craig's, individuals, local shops, out-of-town shops, etc. Along the way through direct and indirect chatter and hearsay or reading between the lines on the web (usually on the websites of wheeler dealer types but also on forums; not this one though) I would get the impression that one simply can visit a guitar show and discover plenty of incredible finds and furthermore many times be able to negotiate a wonderful price for said find. The before mentioned exception relates to my one visit about 15 years ago to a local guitar show. Now I know (as I did then) that one show in Nashville isn't representative of shows everywhere but it was a complete letdown. I don't even mean from the leftybassist POV. I mean even from the "pretend I'm a righty with deep pockets or low expectations" POV. Of course I don't enjoy spending lotsa time procuring and searching and waiting. It sucks. Seems better spent playing, etc. Like I said, I've heard enough dealers paint a picture of, say, having zero instruments then grabbing some cash and driving to a guitar show and coming home with several nice scores among others. And I'm reminded to bring this up now because...you guessed it...there's a "4 Amigos" guitar show coming just down the street from me ($15) What are your experiences? |

I find them quite fun in a museum kind of way. All kinds of famous instruments in a single place that I would never see - for example the D'Angelico teardrop - and often famous guitarists talking. I saw Andy Summers speak once and I think John Taylor was at an event plugging his Peavey model. I would have loved to have met that guy. |
