So after a long day at work I logged onto good ol LeftyBassist.com to see what was new. My 8 year old son walks up to the computer and immediately states "Hey Dad, why is the bass on LeftyBassist a right handed bass?" I looked at the gorgeous old beat up P-bass that adorn's the home page and corrected him that it is actually a left handed bass. He responded with "Well why are the strings on backwards?" and proceeded to point out that the strings on the bass are stung for a right handed bass!

After a double take, I realized he was right. My wife thought it was both hilarious and incredibly observant that our son (who is really into drumming) pointed this out within seconds of looking at the bass when I have looked at that same image hundreds of times and never noticed! Pretty funny! :)

I wonder if anyone else has ever noticed this.

I noticed. ;)

Ronn spotted it right away too, as he strings his basses this way. Guys that learn on a righty bass played lefty will string that way.

It is however strung the typical way now.

From a previous discussion I recall that about a third of our members string that way.

I'm so used to playing that way as well I never gave it a second look as long as it has been there, because to me that IS normal  .

I once started a thread on this subject, as to how many of us string right vs. left, and Frenchy is right; it was about a 1/3 ratio as I recall.

If I recall AustinLeftyBass, Carmine, Amimbari (who is a genius as he can play both ways!) all play with the right-handed stringing like Jimmy Haslip.

we do post a lot so everyone remembers us more, but there are others.

And genius? As much as I appreciate it, Not a chance. It is only a matter of memorizing since the strings and notes are still in the same place. Or people who tune to DGCF as the norm and have to remember that E is now the 2nd fret and G and C are open notes/5th fret. Same as people who have to remember that DADG with a hipshot on the fly now changes the fret positions to make the same note.

Actually I play like Jerry Casale! ;) Haslip's definitely not my thang.

So whay is that? A much higher number than for guitar. Is it because it's mainly single notes as opposed to forming chords?

I dunno about that...

MY HERO who plays everything that Malmsteen does, just on inverted strings is Man Kidal.

look up his videos on youtube. He has no problems playing chords or blazing leads.
