Post subject: | Help wanted re Yamaha Bass |
Hi everyone , new member from UK, thanks for the welcomes posted for me. Now I am going to be a pest ! I have a Yamaha BB1100s which I bought in 1996 second hand ( I actually traded an Ibanez Ricky 4001 copy for it!) and I am trying to establish an approximate age for the bass but it doesnt appear to have a serial no, so I wondered if any of you very knowledgeable chaps would know during what period the bass would have been made. I have only ever seen one other BB1100s and that was in the hands of a certain Mr McCartney (if only!). I hope someone can help me (although I seem to have survived 17 years without knowing!!!) Thanks Guys |

McCartney played a BB1200S, passive neck-through with one P-style splitcoil pickup. The 1100 is active and has a bolt-on neck. The BB1200S was made between 1977 and 1983. I think fellow forum members pjmuck and Carmine both have one? I believe the serial number should be on the back of the headstock. If you can find it, you can date it here: http://www.yamaha.com/apps/guitararchiv ... serial.htm |

Doesn't the "s" denote the active version? I believe McCartney's is the 1200. I own a 1200s, which is active (same bass as Peter Hooks'). Never seen a lefty BB1100s though. Would love to see pix. |

....The BB1100S is maple neck bolt on, alder body, P/J pickups and bypassable 3-band active preamp. Tawain built. I've seen them dated from mid 80's thru early 90's. I noticed the BB1100S doesn't have the "bar pole" jazz pickup that became a visual trademark of the early 80's BBs with P/Js; instead the BB1100S has a common 8 pole jazz pickup on the earlier ones, the later ones have a more stylized 8 pole jazz pickup a with boxy center section molded into the cover- I'm not sure what year that change was made. The only lefty I've run across was this later white one for sale on Arni's site back in 2007--- so show us some pics Leftysteve, is this perhaps the same as yours?

Thanks for the interest guys, I will get some pics on asap, I can see why I mistook Maccas BB1200 for the 1100s as mine looks very similar to Carmines sunburst 1200 and I had seen the photo before I got mine. |

Hi there, I have finally worked out how to take pics of a small enough file size to upload, and hopefully they will appear. Thanks, Steve

Nice bass. Another noticeable difference between the BB1100s and 1200s is the non-reverse P PUP too. |

Thanks guys, looked at the ad in scotland, £130, obviously not a valuable bass, although I never thought otherwise, great bass to play though, very powerful and massive sound range , I wouldnt part with it for anything we have lots of good memories, although a 4003 could tempt me if funds were available! |
