Damn that's a very nice bass ! A Rob Allen is my next gas, before double bass. It would match perfectly for one of my projects. Thanks for sharing !

Simply stunning. I truly believe Rob Allens have one of the sweetest fretless tones I've ever heard. Is their an upcharge for lefties?

Question for you Rob Allen owners. I've never seen one of these basses strung with anything other than black nylon strings. Are these basses built/voiced specifically for use with nylon strings in mind? Anyone experimented with different strings?

Personally I never did, but a friend of mine tried it and it was nice, more like a regular fretless sound but really hard on the fingerboard. I should admit that the mix between these basses and the nylon strings is a winner imo. I have no desire to try something else. If it ain't broken, don't fix it ;-)

I'm right there with you Sly. I have no desire or inclination to mess with a winning formula. I just can't imagine what other strings would do to the tone.

but I'll betcha dollars to doughnuts someone on TB has tried it.

Yep, and I think the beauty of the nylon strings is that it doesn't sound like your average fretless. It is really something in between that and an upright. And I even picked-up mahogany with a padduck top instead of the standard maple to enhance the "thump" of the attack just like an upright. When I tried those two basses at Club Bass in To, it was the first and may be the only time I could really hear the difference of wood tone on the same kind of bass.
