Damn that's a very nice bass ! A Rob Allen is my next gas, before double bass. It would match perfectly for one of my projects. Thanks for sharing ! |

Simply stunning. I truly believe Rob Allens have one of the sweetest fretless tones I've ever heard. Is their an upcharge for lefties? |

Question for you Rob Allen owners. I've never seen one of these basses strung with anything other than black nylon strings. Are these basses built/voiced specifically for use with nylon strings in mind? Anyone experimented with different strings? |

Personally I never did, but a friend of mine tried it and it was nice, more like a regular fretless sound but really hard on the fingerboard. I should admit that the mix between these basses and the nylon strings is a winner imo. I have no desire to try something else. If it ain't broken, don't fix it |

I have no desire or inclination to mess with a winning formula. I just can't imagine what other strings would do to the tone. but I'll betcha dollars to doughnuts someone on TB has tried it. |

Yep, and I think the beauty of the nylon strings is that it doesn't sound like your average fretless. It is really something in between that and an upright. And I even picked-up mahogany with a padduck top instead of the standard maple to enhance the "thump" of the attack just like an upright. When I tried those two basses at Club Bass in To, it was the first and may be the only time I could really hear the difference of wood tone on the same kind of bass. |
