Just flipped through the new Fender Frontline catalog and found, what appears to be, Fender's sole new lefty offering for 2011. Sunburst Squier VM Jazz sunburst with rosewood fretboard. Click on Frontline catalog 2011 then pages 20-21 and 95 for details:

Yeah, I'm not impressed. Just another shitty basswood instrument in a played out paint job. At least the 70s version was cool. I still want one.

I'm pissed that they just refuse to offer us the '51.
They don't need to change anything on it, just make it lefty and I would be happy.

Instead we get................a sunburst Jazz, not even a '75 with binding and blocks, nope just a plain old Jazz.

On a different note, I made my once-a-year appeal to Warmoth to offer their Gecko line lefthanded...............shot down again. :(

You could buy both basses and put the blocked neck on the sunburst body. :geek:

I am not impressed either. It would be great if Squier could do at least one of the 50's vibe packages, since those are unique. I would not be surprised if Squier decided to go with this because they wanted to ride the coatails of the very successful 70's vintage modified natural colored with another 70's vintage modified, and perhaps fallaciously believing that the success of the natural wood colored one would be easily replicated by this new offering.
I think what made the natural wood colored great is that is was so much more different, especially for lefties. The shops I have been to around the US have told me that this bass was the only lefty they ever had a need to get a second one of.

If I were Fender, I would have focused on the unique offering as being the strong selling point, not the 70's vintage, but that is just me.

I have to admit, I am really concerned about this decision because I don't want another Fender Deluxe bass scenario to occur, namely, the bass did not sell well enough, so let's produce less offerings for the lefties. I have the feeling that this new bass will not do that well, and we may see the end of Classic Vintage offerings. I hope not, but I don't see how this is a good decision by them.

Let me know when Fender reintroduces maple fingerboards and/or makes a USA lefty 5'er.

Until then, I have no interest in anything they're doing anymore.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but Sterling by Musicman is doing the Ray 34 LH this year in a honeyburst, instead of in black on black. I am looking much more forward to that than this bass by Fender. For my music, I could not justify the cost of a new Stingray, but a Ray 34 is a little more doable.

Did Fender drop any of the other lefties from their line this year?

No mention of $200.00 Standard Int'l Flat Rate Shipping for a Squire Bass?

For a moment you guys had me fear that they dropped the soft maple-bodied, maple-boarded version with the black painted-on blocks and bindings. Looks a hell of a lot better than this new one! They should drop it and start offering the Vintage Modified '77 Jazz as a lefty!

I just thumbed through the entire catalog. I DON'T SEE AN AMERICAN JAZZ ANYMORE! Only the Precision. Can somebody confirm this, or you guys going to NAMM, get the scoop? If they discontiued the MIA J that would be a travesty. :x

I like this new one better than the 70's VM. I don't know why, but I've never liked natural finish on a Jazz bass. I've owned something like 8 Jazz basses, and I've always avoided the natural ones. Oddly enough, I love the look of a natural finished Precision.

Looking on the web of Squier I found they quit the Standard Precision they have. Hope they put a Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified for lefties soon.
