I won't answer the first question but my oldest basses are a P69 and a EB-1 67. They are younger then me :-(

I'm 41 years young and still kicking!

I do not like old basses or even understand the alure even though the bass I just ordered will be built with wood cured for at least 40 - 50 years ( Yeh I can hear the snickering already ) Look at it this way I will never buy that old dried out rusty crusty Fender out from under you :P ....... so I know I will loose here.

I'm 52 and my oldest lefty bass(which is what the OP asked for) is a '74 Ibanez.

Lefties?

The P69 is. I got it last year at Elderly. Beautiful. Not the original finish but the job is impecc and it has a full mojo vibe with the rusty tuning heads and knobs.

The Gibson EB-1 is not. But since it is a symetrical shape it doesn't matter. I changed the top nut and it is a great sounding bass easy to play too.
