I am interested in finding out the percentage of lefties who play their basses strungwith a top E or a bottom E. Locally there's two of us lefties and it's one apiece

E on the bottom. I know it's "backwards" -- but when you think about it, isn't it more intuitive that the low notes would be on the bottom and the high notes on the top? ;)

Standard layout for me - isn't it already hard enough being a Lefty? :geek:

Why I asked the question was I think most lefties can play either way but righties can't. Why do lefties choose the way the play

My basses are "traditional" lefties with the low E (or B) on top. I started playing at 15 years old in the mid 1960's. Never gave much thought about it. It felt natural to me and, hey, Paul McCartney played the same way! One hidden benefit that developed accidentally over time was that I started practicing watching myself play in a mirror. This led to my ability to watch righty guitar players and "read" their fretting hands just like my own hands in the mirror. To this day I keep an eye on the guitar player's fretting hand.

Standard lefty for me. I suspect a lot of players who string G-E with G on top learned to play that way from simply flipping over righties in music stores and/or buying a righty bass initially, since lefties are few and far between in most retailers. My first bass was a flipped Westbury Track II, though I probably strung it "true" lefty because the other musicians around me told me what I needed to do.

Standard but I kind of wish it was upside down so I could pick up any righty bass and play it.

Standard stringing for me. Although I actually can play simpler stuff upside down through enough sitting in on righty instruments.

My E is on the traditional bass side. Have had tons of experience jamming the other way out of necessity though.

'Normal' lefty here also.

like FOM, I find it nice and easy to learn a line off a guitar player in a pinch due to the mirror image effect.

Left strung. Most who play right strung do so because they learned on a right handed bass flipped upside down.

E on top ... this thread brought to my attention our page header photo is reverse strung ... lol ... we're so backwards ... as far as why leftys do it and not rightys is probably because they could'nt pull it off.

True, but considering you guys can play right handed instruments AS IS no problem, you actually own 95% of the market. ;)
