Okay, so I have pretty small hands/arms. I'm currently using an '88 squier p with 20 frets, but i am on the lookout for a real fender. Ive played a few around town with the full 22 frets, the necks are just so long for me. Ive heard of people switching up p/j necks/bodies, but could you stick a mustang neck on a p or j body? If not, if anybody has a link to legitimate shorter scale fender necks, please do not hesitate! Thanks so much! Camille |

Without some bridge adjusting/moving you couldn't put a mustang neck of a P bass body. However, at one point Fender japan made a left handed short scale P-Bass, which still pop up used on Ebay from time to time. That might be worth watching out for. |

Funny, a 20 fret P-neck is indeed shorter than a 22 fret neck, but the total scale length is exactly identical. Are the lower frets on the 22 fret neck really that much further away when hung to a strap? If you're considering putting a Mustang neck on a Precision, then why not actually get a Mustang Bass? They're kinda rare to come by lefthanded, but they do exist. I've seen a sherwood green Mustang Bass with light green competition stripes on eBay.co.uk about a year ago that looked to die for. Too bad Warmoth doesn't offer conversion necks for longscale basses to be converted to shortscale. They do so for their guitars, there's a 24,75" conversion neck for 25,5" scale Fender style guitars. |

I decided I was never gonna find/afford a lefty Mustang Bass, so I got one of these, I love the neck. |

Are 20 fret P-necks just as wide as a normal one? For me, it's not the length that gets to me, it's the width. |

There have been slight variations throughout the years, but basically a P-neck is relatively wide, without much exception. There have been Precisions with Jazz-necks though. |

a J width Fender style neck (1-1/2" nut) fits nicely on a P body, as do both versions of a P Fender style neck (1-3/4" & 1-5/8" nut) fit on a J body ... so long as you're matching like bodies to necks (i.e. MIM bodies->necks, MIA bodies->necks, MIJ bodies->necks, etc ... and of relatively similar years) so that you have consistency in the neck heel and neck pocket dimensions all the best, R |
