I have no experience, but... someone asked about him on the TB forums and I noticed he charges a 25% upcharge for lefty, which might be the highest I've ever seen.

I mean, really? You're going to charge me $625 on a $2500 Fender copy, just to make it lefty?

I think I'd almost rather have a person just say no than tell me that.

John @ BluesmanVintage is the sh*t... His work and knowledge of vintage specs is top notch. There is a talkbass member friend of mine, "Jaymi" well known for his videos on youtube. He owns a lot of pink basses and used to do a lot of Spector videos. He is tight with John and we were talking about a custom 70's era build but I am not buying basses right now. Thumbs up here for John's work. From what I hear, he's got it nailed. My 2 cents!!!!

* edit... "bassjaymi" is in the link above. That's who I mentioned. I didn't look at the video.

Yes, I'm leaning more and more towards Bluesman vintage. I sure hope he still offers the Fender shaped headstock though.

SB-1's are available again, but I'm not so sure they are available lefty. Wouldn't hurt to check. Certainly not "custom" though.

They are available lefty :)
So says the most recent price list I have seen.

All USA G&Ls are available lefty for no additional charge. G&L also recently reintroduced the LB 100 which is a P bass. You can order and USA model in many different finishes, different neck widths, fingerboards, etc. Not fully custom shop but many options and reasonable price for really good quality.

Anyone knows what's the difference between the L100 and the SB-1?
Both seem to be available.

The LB-100 is a classic pbass, the SB-1 has a smaller body and uses the G&L MFD pickups

They also have different pickups. Here is a thread on the G&L bass forum that explains more:

I just fucking love G&L. I used to have a u.s legacy strat which was amazing. I sold it to get a 1980 les Paul custom. looking back I should have sold a kidney instead.
very lefty friendly (it was the only new decent lefty guitar I could find around here.) very huigh quality stuff. they make u.s fenders look like cheap skylark rip offs.

But does the LB-100 sound like a classic P-Bass or a G&l flavor of a P-Bass like Sadowsky or Lakland?

His work looks amazing http://johnkvintageguitars.homestead.com/order.html however the 25% up charge for Lefties I feel it very high. Once the bass is all done with features assume $2500 + $625 just for being left handed is very high. I would suggest Mike Lull or Nino Valenti as I have lefty's from both of them for under $2300 for all bells and whistles.

Nino's maybe but a Mike Lull bass lefty under 2300 with bells and whistles.... your several hundred off here. Used maybe... Mike's basses ain't cheap and he charges 15% upcharge for lefty builds... even his stock P basses are expensive.

Apparently not...

According to Ken Baker from the "bassesbyleo" forum, the JB is not available lefty. Bummer!

Yeah I saw too - it is a bummer :( I had a JB2 that has the same electronics as the JB so you could get that lefty - at least you could a few years ago. I ordered it from Greg at Rocket Music. I would definitely recommend Greg if you are thinking of a new custom order G&L.

Off topic - just a rant, really. I love G&L's - owned two, still own one. Mine sounds like a P bass (via my old 1982 Fender P) on steroids. They have a few basses that really interest me, but I have become over the past two decades a tried-n-true 5-string fanatic. I am not really interested in 4's any longer. I wish G&L would take the 5-string plunge and offer options for 4- or 5- strings on every bass.

/rant
