In need of an inexpensive tuner...

Dropped by my local store (not GC)

expected to pick up something like a low end Korg traditional plug-in type thing (they have them for like $15ish)

Dude says I should take a look at the "Snark"

I do. It looks cool. He puts it on a Stratocaster and shows me what it'll do. Works very well. Finds the notes quick . Slick.

I like the bold and bright readout...

But how accurate is it?

Then I ask how it does on bass. We clamp it onto the headstock of a cheapy jazz copy.

Worked just as good.

I'm skeptical b/c you don't actually plug into it.

He assures me (he has a bass) it's the real deal and he hasn't used a plug in tuner in so long he can't remember...

I held off to seek more advice.

I know it's not a Peterson strobe accurate thing but is it just as good as any other under $50 tuner?

It's just $20 but...

Thoughts?

I have one and I love it. I have not A/B'd it with a strobe tuner, but it tunes just as well as my old Korg Pitchblack pedal tuner, and it agrees with the several IOS app tuners I have on my phone. There are a few different models - mine is the black cased version.

Snark tuners are very good. Not as fussy as Petersons, though I only own a Peterson Stroboclip. I don't know how many different tuning options the Snark has, but the Peterson works for many different istruments, tunings, etc. I also downloaded the Peterson Strobo iPhone app, which is great and cheap as well, especially if you need to tune an instrument (like a woodwind) that you can't clamp anything to it tunes via your built in mic.

They tune great. I break them too easily at the swivel part, so I tend to just stick to Korg CA-40's and TU-3's and TU-10s.
I think out of all the clip tuners, the Snark easily has the best display.

Thanks for all the responses y'all.

Bigevil, my first reaction was Wow! that readout looks great! This was followed by gut feeling of beware flashy gizmo that's sure to become a regret impulse buy.

Anyway, I'm getting one now.

Thanks!

Agree with all of the above. However I still use a tuner pedal at gigs, because I lost 3 Korg AW-2's in a month's worth of gigs.
