I'm not affiliated with this auction in any way.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1996-Fender-Japan-7-8-Size-Jazz-Bass-Left-Handed-Medium-Scale-MIJ-White-/121232236830?pt=Guitar&hash=item1c3a01211e

But I am sort of interested in it. I know Fender Japan is significantly more adventurous than USA, but this doesn't look like anything I've ever seen before. I don't think I've ever seen a Fender with a side jack, and definitely no short scale jazzes. It says "controls all the same" but there are four knobs. And shouldn't there be more stickers on the headstock? Getting that out of Fender is a tall order in the first place, but in LEFT HANDED??!

Honestly looks like a neat bass either way, but what's your verdict?

I'm guessing it's really a Japanese Fender, 34" scale, aftermarket pickups/electronics and routed for the side jack.

ok I'm home from work now and can see the pics properly, and it definitely is a 96 MIJ, probably basswood. Besides the pups, electronics and routed jack, the only other thing that stands out is the neckplate isn't stamped 'Fender'.

now about the scale - I've never heard of them making such a thing, but perhaps they exist:

Fender Japan does make a 7/8 Jazz Bass called the JB62M, but they've only introduced it fairly recently (within the last 5 years) and there is definitely no lefty version. They did a medium scale Precision once in the mid 80s (32" scale, slightly downsized body) in both righty and lefty versions, but as far as I know a similar Jazz Bass was never offered as a lefty. So I have to agree with Stingray5 :). I also agree the controls and the sidemounted jack aren't original.

That black medium scale E-series Jazz is a really cool find! I've never seen one before or heard of it.

Here's one of the new JB62M's next to its bigger brother, the full-scale JB62US. I'd be all over that if they did a lefty run!

It's a legit Fender. I have an '89 medium scale p-bass and it doesn't have a "Fender" stamp on the neckplate.
