Wow... maybe, I'm just oversensitive at this point, but what a fucking slap in the face this is.

I let them know how I am feeling about it on their facebook post... bullshit.

Looking at the glass half full, it would not take that much to convert it to a real lefty...I wonder how much they go for?

I'd guess you'd need to have a small control cavity routed for the volume/tone/pup switch, those holes filled n sprayed, have side dots put in if wanted n toss the scratch plate so $100-200? Not a bad idea Frenchy!!

And a maple neck... How do they justify telling us that they can't produce left-handed bodies/necks? I can't imagine the target customer base for these things are greater than the number of LH players.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: discrimination, pure and simple.

Well I am curious why a company like Schecter can offer literally dozens of different left handed instruments while a company like Fender acts like it's passing a kidney stone to make one or two stinkin' models. Does this all come down to MIA vs. MIK/MIC, etc? Assuming Fender owns a lion's share of the instrument market, wouldn't it mean they'd take less of a hit/risk? Or does it mean that the bigger the company, the tighter the belt straps? 'Cause I'm pretty sure Schecter's custom MIA dept. will make a lefty too.

Anybody wanna send an e-mail off to Schecter asking why they're able to make it work? Just curious.

I got an email a couple of days ago from Fender. I am still in the process of trying to formulate a thoughtful response. I have a bunch of ideas. Anyhow, here it is, feel free to respond as you all wish.

Hello Alvin,

I have passed your concerns on to our production manager. In a limited line like
left hand oriented instruments we will tend to stay with our most popular selling colors
but if there is a strong demand we will examine the options for production.

Best regards,

At risk of sounding like a pessimist, don't get your hopes up that some petition singed by a multitude of lefties is going to amount to any change in Fender's business plan. We've been down this road before, and it's all basically lip service.

Ridiculous. The classic case of something like this was Fender's reverse Hendrix strat for righties. It was basically a lefty strat set up for righties with a reversed nut/PUPS.

I am not optimistic about this. I actually took this very, very negatively. I wanted to counter argue them, I just have not had the time to sit down and write a thoughtful response.

After reading all of your comments, the thing that gripes me is that considering the millions - or probably billions - that the Fender Conglomerate makes annually, from all of their brands, they could certainly put out a limited number of left hand basses with Maple necks, in a variety of colors and shapes. And, they just might break even or make a few bucks on them in the long run.

But so what if they lost a few thousand in the process? Just doing that would create an intense loyalty among left handers, and we would sing the praises of Fender, rather than grumble as we're now doing, and becoming more unhappy as we realize they see us more as a liability, and not an asset in free advertising.

Maybe the other way for them to approach this is to do a direct mailing so dealers dont' get stuck with them hanging on the wall too long, or at least let us do a mail order/direct ship process through the dealer so he doesn't lose out on the sale....

Of course, judging by your posts here, whatever Fender did to placate us with lefty bass models would be snatched up quickly because of how hungry we all are to have anything other than another left handed bass in black with a Rosewood neck!

I agree; it wouldn't take much to throw us a bone. Ultimately I would like to see every model available in left and right versions.

As we've seen, it's not a bother to make left-handed bodies, necks, etc. Cost and production problems can be overcome. The single biggest obstacle is changing the mindset. There may be just a handful of people (or even just one) at companies like Fender who are of the opinion that LH models "won't sell", and they "can't move them", or "we can't afford to do it". Overcoming this thinking is the goal. Then the rest will follow, and the roadblocks will be removed.

Writing and complaining, making your voice heard, is the crucial step. One drop of rain will not erode a mountain, but over time, a lot of them can.

I wonder why Fender couldn't alternate fingerboard wood or finishes every couple years/ Like do maple boards for 2013, rosewood for 2014+2015, maple for 2016, etc.

And like the Gibson guitars of the month, I suspect a limited run of lefties in a different finish would sell for them no problem. Especially the Gibson guitars of the month as an example because some of those were over the top ugly and poorly designed and they still all sold on collectibility alone. I can't see Fender struggling to move a few hundred lefty Geddy Lee signature basses or '57 reissue P-Basses.

Might be worthwhile to take a photo of what you got and attach it to an email to Fender: "This is what I bought, because you wouldn't make one for me".
