E string on the bottom for basses.
For standard 6 string guitar, E on top.
I learned guitar first, and then picked up the bass to fill in occasionally. No-one would ever let me re-string their righty basses the "correct" way (E on top), so I learned holding it upside down but strung "righty".
Kinda odd, but I'm glad I did so. I can play any righty just by flipping it, and all my basses are lefty bodies and necks strung righty.
So, put another one down in the "E on the bottom" column.

B/E on top, standard, although I can get around on a righty flipped & play relatively easy tunes that way, though slapping is tough. Good point about the reversed strings making geographic sense and actually, I'm 80% righty who plays lefty & it make sense to me that as my stronger or more dexterous hand is on the fretboard, it would be more natural, with the left hand having the 'easier' job of picking out rhythm & if you look at piano, that's the way it's laid out too. Piano left hand=rhythm, Piano right hand=melody. I think 'righty' should actually be 'lefty' & vice versa. What do you guys think?
It's inconvenient playing lefty but I'd never change & in fact, I'm hoping to get my sons to play lefty so that they can inherit all my cool basses & guitars.
Please, I'm not a double agent, don't disown me for not being a 'true' lefty!!! :o
