I've had this bass since around 1994.

Wow - just when I wasn't getting surprised by vintage instruments any more! I had no idea Gibson made any of those in lefty. It's beautiful. Do you play in a Yardbirds cover band by chance?

I was in a band in the 90's that played a lot of brit-pop... think the Smiths, Cure etc.

Here is the serial number for the curious:

EB 2C
538578

2= single pickup
C= cherry
538 = 1969 etc
(Per Pete Moreno and Idris N.)

The neck is not walnut which PJ though, but Pete said it's actually mahogany.

I'm going to have Pete make me a new pickguard. He made me one back in 1994 but I didn't specify single pickup, so he made it for two. To my surprise he's still around so I am mailing him the one he made me, and he's going to find or make me another one. I think the guitar will look cooler that way. Pete worked for Gibson for a long time.

What do you guys think the bass is worth? I sometimes toy with selling it. I can provide contact info of the shop that sold me the bass back in 1994 too.

A few weeks ago I saw the videos for The Jam's "Town Called Malice" & "Absolute Beginners" on an oldies show and bassist Bruce Foxton was playing a (righty) one of these. I thought of yours....so cool!

Yeah and the guy from the Cure has played one too in a bunch of their videos.

Jimmy from SouthPaw showed interest in my bass last year too, he said he's had one or two.

Do you really want to sell something like that? Seems pretty irreplaceable to me.

True, and I do collect some other things. But I only play the bass once every couple of years, so I feel bad.

Fair enough. I'm always of two minds about this sort of thing. Part of me strongly believes that musical instruments are made to be played and not be museum pieces. Another part of me says that pieces like this are good investments, esp if you picked it up cheap in the first place, and history has shown that it's pretty safe to assume they will go up in value. So you could sell it when you're sixty-five or something and it can help fund senior citizen costs. Of course, there is also no reason why you can't do BOTH things if you are still an active musician.

Glad you like it. I need to get with a guy in MI who can make me a correct replacement pick guard. The one one he made me in 1996 has a cutout for a dual-pickup guitar as you can see.

Can't decide if I like it better with-or-without the pickguard... either way, it is a beautiful bass! The guitar player in one of my bands has the 6-string version of this, and same color.... would be cool to stand next to him with this model! ;)

This is how the pick guard should look:

I've decided - because I don't play with a pick, I would leave the pickguard off! That way I would match my buddy who has taken his off as well.... :)

I haven't had time but will eventually have a repro single pickup guard made by the same guy who made the wrong one for me in 1994.
