4 months ago I joined a little jazz-school in Amsterdam, called Djam. I'm proud to be able to show my fellow Southpaws my first steps in Jazz and some real-life-Sadowsky-flatwoundsky-ness Really happy about how the sound is recorded (just a camcorder). Hope you enjoy my combo playing at the 'Christmas Concert' (Dutch blattering from 38:23). I'm the one with the Green Machine. Songs are: 1. Summertime (lots of mistakes, soft amp) 2. Watermelon Man (better, louder amp, with solo) 3. Blue Bossa (my favorite, with more J-pup and solo) Before and after us, the rest of the school is playing their studied pieces: http://www.youtube.com/THXwO4HRc7g |

Very nice indeed! It's kinda nice not having a drummer over-powering the band eh? |

Yes, the drummer is really good at listening to the rest of us and adapting his volume (the bariton-sax player less so). It's also something we learn in jazz-school, really listening to each other and holding back if necessary (when the softer instruments play their solo). Lucky for me, the bass (although we use amps theez dayz) still is considered a 'soft' instrument (in the ol'days of double bass). So everybody holds back. |

Played a new short live-set! Pretty cohesive sound as a band, despite missing one guitar and the sax. We've got a lot of compliments and we feel ourselves growing the more we play. Songs were Equinox, Little Sunflower, and Blue Bossa (last two with solo, around 8:57 and 15:05): https://youtu.be/Ccf58-DVMMw This set I'm using the Sadowsky stainless steel flatwounds for the last time. I have new strings now, Thomastik-Infeld flatwounds. After nearly a year I wanted another, more mellow and jazzy sound. I will lose some of the presence, as it came apparent in practice, but the TI's sing a bit more. |
