Hi all,
I brought an instrument out of the basement that has been siting there for a few years (or more :?) and I noticed that the clearcoat on the back of the neck is cracked right where the "skunk stripe" meets the main part of the neck for a few inches.

Do you think this might be because I left it sitting for years without any strings on it, or simply because this kind of thing just happens, and that's just life? The basement is pretty stable, temperature wise.

I'm not particularly worried about it, it sounds and plays as great as it ever has. I'm just curious on your thoughts and opinions. If leaving it sit without any tension on the neck was a stupid thing to do, by all means don't be afraid to say so. I was admittedly young and dumb at the time. In retrospect, it seems silly that I thought it would be better to leave strings off of it as there are plenty of instruments that have had strings on them since the 60's, and they are still fine.

Personally, I don't think guitar necks are as soft and fragile as many people like to believe. Or, maybe I have just been lucky and have not yet experienced a warped neck.

Thanks!

Yes, leave the strings on when you store the bass.
