Has anyone here had experience playing a 5 string bass with PASSIVE Jazz Bass style pickups? Just wondering because passive 5 stringers don't seem all that common. What are your thoughts? |

I'm in the same boat Matt. I have almost all the parts to complete my Warmoth Jazz V. I will be using Nordstrand Big Singles in a completely passive circuit. I hope it is everything I'm looking for, but if I need to go active there is plenty of room in the control cavity to add it. I sincerely hope I don't have to, I am not fond of on-board active electonics. Will be sending the body off to Pat Wilkins for a cherry sunburst finish and if everything goes as planned I should finally have this badboy completed this summer. |

passive basses are where it's at IMO, and why I've been pushing the passive bow wave for quite some time now. I have had great feedback at NAMM each year that 'somebody actually gets it' from those who make their living in the studio and tour the arena stages backing big name solo acts build a passive bass that sounds incredible and you have a great thing to build upon should you ever want to add an active preamp for tone tweaking on stage. sadly, these days so many basses utilize an active preamp to overcome shortcomings in their passive tone ... discovering you have "suck tone" running passive is a horrid thing to experience when you step into the studio and the producer/engineer requests you bypass the active circuit for recording work our new Malibu model is passive, and I sold out all of our 5-string and 6-string inventory at NAMM. let your ears and not your peers tell you what sounds best all the best, R |

Thanks for the replies. I have always wondered why most basses other than 4 strings seem to be active. I could be wrong, it just seems that way. I'm trying to decide what direction to go in. |
