Post subject:  baritone guitar / six string bass question

I was recommended to start using a six string bass in my band (this is six string like a Fender VI or a Danelectro so they meant a baritone guitar). The idea of playing a deeper rhythm guitar as well as the ability for bass runs seems attractive. Has anyone here actually had any experience playing one and how it sounds in a band? Also, do they even make lefties for these things? Thanks in advance.

A shame Ibanez doesn't make this in a lefty... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQcUL_eqMFM

But, I'm sure our forum experts will weigh-in and let you know what's available out there....

Schecter makes/made the Hellcat VI that was available left handed and looks and sounds cool. Revelation makes a rather lovely and very affordable Fender Bass VI interpretation too.

I used to own a Schecter Hellcat VI. Fantastic sounding instrument, but I just never found enough use for it. Great not only for copping bass when needed, but those classic Cure or Ennio Morricone "Spaghetti Western" tones too. Ultimately, I found that I could get close to those sounds when occasionally needed using my Line 6 Variax (tuned down) or EH POG pedal on a guitar instead.

When I think of a Fender Bass VI, I think of Sergio Vega, of Quicksand and Deftones. There are a few cool clips out there of him playing the VI. - apologies I’m at work so can’t dig them up. Here’s a quick interview where he talks about the introduction of the VI and his tuning:

I have the revelation one. It gets you a big variety of different tones from twangy to plain good old bass. 3 pickups + varitone switch helps with that.

I use it in a duo setting and I have played it in a band rehearsal just a couple of times. I feel that its a another thing from regular bass despite of the E-E tuning.

I enjoy mine a lot. No mods needed and good build quality for the price. Stays in tune like crazy. Roller bridge and nice jazzmaster tremolo.

I have a Schecter Ultra VI I use for a couple songs in one band. I really like it. A lot of fun to play.
